Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti is an American actor, known for his distinctive gravelly Jersey-esque voice. He is best known for his countless film roles, such as Limbo (both voice and motion capture) in the 2001 sci-fi film Planet of the Apes, Marty Wolf, the main antagonist of the 2002 Universal Pictures comedy film Big Fat Liar, Joe Gould in the 2005 biographical sports drama film Cinderella Man, Rhino in the 2014 Marvel superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jerry Heller in the biographical drama film Straight Outta Compton, and Dr. Lawrence Hayeas in the disaster film San Andreas (both released in 2015). He also voiced Tim the Gatekeeper in the 2005 Blue Sky Studios film Robots, Stan Beals, the main antagonist of the 2006 Warner Bros. animated film The Ant Bully, and Chet in the 2013 DreamWorks film Turbo.
His Disney roles include portraying Extras Guild Researcher in the 1995 Miramax film Mighty Aphrodite, Jeremiah Piper in the 1998 television film Tourist Trap, Carlo in the 1999 Touchstone Pictures film Cradle Will Rock, Todd Woods in the 2000 Hollywood Pictures film Duets, Ralph in the 2013 biographical drama film Saving Mr. Banks, and Nilo Nemolato in the 2021 fantasy adventure film Jungle Cruise.
Giamatti was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the youngest of three children. His father, Angelo Bartlett Giamatti, was a Yale University professor who later became president of the university and later commissioner of Major League Baseball. His mother, Toni Marilyn Giamatti (née Smith), was a homemaker and English teacher who taught at the Hopkins School and had also previously acted. His paternal grandfather's family were Italian emigrants from Telese Terme; the family surname was originally spelled "Giammattei" (Italian pronunciation: [dʒammatˈtɛi]) before immigrating to the United States. His paternal grandmother had deep roots in New England, dating back to the colonial era. Giamatti's brother, Marcus, is also an actor, and his sister, Elena, was a jewelry designer.
