The Constitution is a special steam train that appears in The Lone Ranger.

The engine on the train is a type of 4-6-0 coal burning steam engine or an American type steam locomotive, which was the most common wheel arrangement for steam locomotives during the 1800's and 1830's until 1928, because these types were given the name "American" in 1872 to show how they did all the work of every railroad in America. These types of engines have ten wheels (four leading wheels, six driving wheels, and no trailing) since this engine was built in 1867 by the Mason Machine Works of Philadelphia, PA.

While Latham Cole makes a speech about the railroad, the engine made its first on screen appearance, parked just before the highest and longest wooden trestle bridge (shown on screen) that is located on the Commanche border.

The train appears next when John Reid brings Butch Cavendish to Latham Cole. The Constitution is then used to transport our main cast (except Tonto) to the Silver mine. At said Silver mine, it is pulled forward into the entrance of the mine to make room for the firing line. The miners, consiting mainly of Chinese immigrants, are forced out of the tunnel. Inside though, Tonto puts his bird in a cage which confuses the engineer into thinking its gas and Tonto is going to blow up the mountain, so they reverse out of the mine. Little did they know, the tracks were switched and the Constitution reversed right into the silver cars, saving John's life. During the battle with the natives, Cavendish forced the engineer at gunpoint to pursue Tonto and John further into the mine.

When the Constitution idled at Promontory, Utah for the Transcontinental Railroad alongside another steam engine, which is the "Jupiter" being an 4-4-0 engine, also known as an American type steam locomotive, which was the common wheel arrangement for steam trains during the 1800's and 1830's until 1928 on American railroads for being given the name "American" in 1872, Tonto climbed into the cab and stole the train as the Jupiter sped into pursuit of the Constitution.

When Rebecca Reid and Danny put on the brakes of the Constitution, it stopped making it the only locomotive to survive the events of the film.

After the Great Train Chase the Constitution made it back to the town to give John Reid a reward just before he was leaving the town.

The engine used in a Advil commercial heavily modified but still retains some trademarks to identify it.

The engine in the HBO show Westworld. The engine retains the side tanks and head lamp from the Advil commercial but is now painted in a red and black livery.

  • After filming the movie the Constitution and the Jupiter were both donated to the Fillmore and Western Railway were they are seen today in storage. They sat in storage together until 2021, when the Fillmore and Western Railway Museum sold the Jupiter and some rolling stock to the Volo Auto museum in Volo, IL where it is placed on static display today but the Constitution is still at the Railway.
  • The Mason Locomotive Works, the builder of the engine, in real life, was based in Taunton, Massachusetts, not Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and it was named the Mason Machine Works.
  • The engine was owned by Latham Cole, and its own Engineer.
  • The engine used to be on display at the gate of the Hollywood Studios at Disney California Adventure for the movie premiere that occurred on June 22, 2013.
  • The engine was used in an Advil commercial; it was heavily modified, but still retains some trademarks to identify it.
  • The engine is now being used as a train in the HBO show Westworld. The engine retains its side tanks and head lamp from the Advil commercial but is now painted in a red and black livery. In Westworld it's named the "Black Ridge Limited". It also appears in the NBC show The Good Place in a similar livery, as the engine for the "Trans Eternal Railway".
  • There's another steam engine in real life that has the name "The Constitution": Boston & Maine No. 3713 which is currently under restoration at Steamtown.
  • The Constitution strongly resembles Illinois Central Railroad #382, the very same engine that Casey Jones drove on that fateful night in 1900. Only differences are that the Constitution has a rounded top firebox instead of a square shaped Belpaire firebox like on the 382 & with two step ladders at the very front.
  • The Constitution was not the real engine at Promontory Point. That was Union Pacific 119.
  • The Constitution was featured in Disney Infinity.
  • The Constitution made a cameo appearance in Coco. The engine retains the same appearance from The Lone Ranger except without the tender. In the movie shown in a flashback, the locomotive was sitting at the train station while Héctor and Ernesto de la Cruz are walking to the train station and Héctor dies.
  • The engine is the main engine pulling Latham Cole's train and the cars carrying the silver and was seen in most of the film.
