Act One: Illusions and Larceny[]

At the X Middle School's talent show, reformed troublemaker Linus Santiago puts on an amazing magic act, but when he performs a disappearing trick with Dewey Hubble's robot dog Barcode and fails to make it reappear, Linus is arrested. When questioned, Linus claims someone else must have stolen Barcode when he made it disappear, but he refuses to tell how he did it due to the Magician's Code. The Safety Patrol doubts Linus is the culprit, but Folsom doesn't believe it considering Linus' past and threatens to expel him at the end of the week if he doesn't cooperate. During the investigation Linus' partner Rita insists he innocent since he was working on his magic act for months. The Safety Patrol looks into Kip Fontanella, who only won the talent show with his ventriloquism act because Linus was disqualified. When questioned, Kip turns out to be incredibly shy to the point he sometimes talks through his dummy, and he regrets winning the talent show since it brought much unwanted attention to him. They also learn he's Dewey's neighbor and friend. With Kip being a dead end, the Safety Patrol then investigates another suspect, Claudia Dunks, a student whose pocket bike was destroyed by one of Linus' past crimes. When they look for Claudia at an alternative bike rally, a disguised suspect riding her new pocket bike chases them.

The suspect manages to escape, though Claudia's bike is destroyed in the process and Claudia is cleared a as suspect when she reports her bike stolen at the same time as the chase. Ingrid and Fillmore then decide to investigate Barcode and learmn from Dewey and Kip that Dewey was taking care of it to prove to his mom he was responsible enough to have a real dog from a litter Kip's dog had. When asked if anyone knew if he was going to the talent show, Dewey reveals he got a ticket for the talent show in the mail. Examining the letter the ticket came in, the Safety Patrol finds a piece of glitter that Rita always wears and confront her. Rita runs, but's she's caught after a chase. During questioning, Rita admits she has been dealing with an anonymous supplier who was paying her in her favorite glitter, which she wore to impress Linus, in exchange for making sure Dewey was in the audience and brought on stage. However, she didn't know Linus was going to be framed for theft and even posed as the bike thief at the rally to take suspicion on him, Linus forgives Rita while Barcode's collar found floating in the lake with a piece of Linus' magician cape caught on it.

Act Three: Secrets Revealed[]

Forensics shows that the collar was in the lake since the night of the talent show. and it looks bad for Linus when the glitter Rita was paid in is traced to a store with his name on the customer log. Fillmore is unsure about Linus' innocence, but without any proof, Folsom is ready to expel him, even when Ingrid realizes the collar was rigged to float so it would be found and Linus would be set up. Linus stands by the Magician's code, insisting magic means too much to him to let it go, giving Fillmore a new angle on the case. The Safety Patrol goes to Kip's house where they and Dewey find Barcode hidden in his closet. Kip takes Barcode and flees into the attic where he reveals that he stole Barcode because he had no friends until the puppies were born and he didn't want Dewey to take any of them. He stole Barcode so Dewey's mom wouldn't let him get a dog and paid off Rita to get Dewey and Barcode on stage since Dewey never let the robot out of his sight. Figuring out Linus' trick, Kip stole Barcode when he made it disappear and left him to take the fall, throwing the floating collar into the lake to further suspicion against him and leaving Linus' name in the glitter's store's customer log. Knowing he'll lose his puppies when his parents find out what he did, Kip threatens to drop Barcode out of the attic window until Fillmores calls him out on how selfish he is. He and Dewey remind Kip that Dewey always acted like a friend to him, but he never did the same. Realizing they are right, Kip gives up Barcode and apologetically agrees to let Dewey have one of his puppies. Later, Kip admits his actions against Linus and gives up the talent show prize money to Linus, who decides to use it to help replace Claudia's bike.
