"Forbidden Date" is the eighth episode in season 1 of The Proud Family. It first aired on November 2, 2001.

Overview[]

Penny breaks her father's no-dating rule when she goes to the amusement park and pairs up with a boy named Carlos. Elsewhere, her parents go on a double date to a day spa.

Episode Summary[]

Penny makes some curly fries for Oscar. Oscar appreciates them, but then gets suspicious that Penny wants something. Penny asks if it is okay for her to start dating. Oscar refuses, citing his rule: No dating until after Penny is married. Penny tries to convince Oscar and Trudy that she isn't a little kid anymore, but is unsuccessful. After Penny rushes off to her room to sulk, Trudy suggests that Oscar at least explain why he does not want Penny to date. Oscar feels that he should not have to explain himself about this matter.

Later, Felix and Papi come over, wanting to watch TV with Oscar since Felix can't find the key to his own TV room. Oscar lets them in, but they find that Trudy has put a "man-block on the TV," preventing them from watching any sports or scantily clad women. Penny prepares to leave for an amusement park trip with her friends. But, Trudy says that Penny must bring the twins along, as she and Oscar are going on a date. Felix teases him, but Trudy declares that it is a double date and Sunset will be joining them. Suga Mama states that she will be on a "date" with Papi, and can't watch the twins either. Sunset takes the entire group in her police truck, and once they leave, Suga Mama and Papi throw a party.

The parents drop the girls and babies off at the Wild Wild World amusement park, saying they will pick them up at 10pm. Oscar shouts through the police truck's PA that Penny must stay away from any boys. As soon as the girls enter the park, they begin looking for their dates. Penny worries a little, as this is breaking her father's "no-dating rule." LaCienega spots the boys they are meeting up with - 4 football players. One of the boys, Carlos, is overweight, and not as handsome as the other boys. The girls argue over who will pair up with Carlos, and LaCienega decides that whoever the boy speaks with first is who is paired with him. Carlos then approaches LaCienega and says hello. While Penny, Zoey, and Dijonay chat with the other boys, LaCienega lets Penny know that she needs to deal with the twins before doing anything else. While Penny takes the twins to the park's daycare, LaCienega grabs the boy Penny was chatting with, and tells Carlos that Penny is into bigger guys. Carlos explains this to Penny when she comes back, which angers her. Nonetheless, she and Carlos try to get on a roller coaster. Carlos is too big to ride, so he and Penny disembark. LaCienega mocks his weight as they leave. Penny asks why Carlos would let LaCienega insult him, and Carlos explains that karma will make its way to LaCienega eventually.

Meanwhile, Oscar, Felix, Trudy, and Sunset arrive at the location of their double date: a day spa. The men are not on-board until they notice the sexy attendant who escorts them into their room. The attendant tells them to get ready for a "good, old-fashioned rub down", and they believe it means they will both get to sleep with her, but their happiness is cut short when Dr. Payne enters. Dr. Payne owns the spa, and thus, will be giving massages to Felix and Oscar. The men are not happy about this.

Back at the park, Penny and Carlos are at the food court. Carlos eats his pizza while Penny sulks. He asks what's wrong, and she responds that she wants to get on some rides. Carlos suggests a dropping chairs ride, but Penny is afraid that the cables will break due to Carlos' weight. She offers to ride a carousel, and Carlos agrees. But, he squishes the horse by accident. Penny is ready to tell Carlos that she doesn't want to hang out with him anymore, but is distracted by a panic in the crowd. Bebe and Cece have escaped the daycare and have made their way onto a roller coaster. The ride's operator can't stop the coaster, and Penny pleads that Carlos help them. When the coaster passes the landing, Carlos jumps on and catches the twins before they fall off of the tracks. He manages to route the coaster to an emergency landing, and everyone gets off of the coaster unharmed. Penny thanks Carlos for saving Bebe and Cece's lives, and gives him a loving smile.

Back at the spa, Trudy and Sunset are getting pampered by their muscular masseuses. They wonder if their husbands are having as good of a time as they are. Oscar and Felix are being manhandled by Dr. Payne. He even shapes them into balls and bounces them around the room. But, Dr. Payne's "treatment" works; Oscar and Felix have all the tension and knots worked out of their bodies. Dr. Payne's session with the men continues.

At the park, Penny and Carlos approach a Norse-themed test-your-strength game. The barker makes references to Norse mythology, and Penny is confused. Carlos explains the terms to her, saying that he loves mythology. He takes the hammer, and slams it onto the board, sending the Hun-shaped puck into the bell and up into the sky. Carlos wins a teddy bear and gives it to Penny. Penny thanks him, and admits that she was not expecting to have a good time with Carlos. But, she is happy she got to know him better. Penny and Carlos make their way back to Zoey, Dijonay, and LaCienega. The remaining three girls are all wet after going on a water ride, and are waiting for the other boys to bring them towels. Penny points out the other boys, who are now chatting up a different group of girls. Dijonay sourly says that the girls had a bad time at the park, but Penny counters that she and Carlos had fun. LaCienega mocks Carlos' weight again, and this earns her two ice cream cones in the eyes, courtesy of Bebe and Cece. Sunset and the other parents arrive to pick up the girls. Carlos and Penny bid each other farewell, hoping to see each other soon.

At the Proud house, Oscar is angry with Penny for being with Carlos. Penny insists that she wasn't on a date, but at that moment, there is a knock at the door. It's Carlos, returning Penny's stuffed bear to her. He then asks if he can go on a real date with Penny sometime. Oscar tells Carlos that Penny is too young for dating and slams the door in his face. Penny gets upset, stating that Oscar tells her to grow up frequently, but treats her like a child when she tries to do anything mature. She runs up to her room. Trudy points out that Penny is no longer a child, and Oscar needs to explain his reasoning to her.

Oscar goes to Penny's room and tells her that he does not want Penny chasing after "some pretty face" like Trudy did with him. Penny explains that she is a different person after the day's events. She says that Carlos is a brave, kind, and intelligent person, and that is what matters most. She adds that Carlos reminds her of Oscar (or at least her idea of him). Oscar is surprised to hear this, and commends Penny's new maturity. Penny asks if that means she can date, and Oscar says no. But, he modifies the rule: No dating until she turns 16. Oscar still grounds her for a week for disobeying him, but ultimately, Penny accepts this.

Some time later, Penny and Carlos are at the Proud house, working on an assignment for school. Oscar enters the kitchen, and notices there is no food in the refrigerator. He pulls Penny aside, and states that he will allow Penny to do her assignment at Carlos' house, so Carlos won't eat all of their food.

Memorable Quotes[]

  • Penny: Daddy, I don't get it! You always tell me to grow up! But when I try, you treat me like a little kid! You guys don't let me do anything!
  • Oscar: My young daughter is too young to go on a date with you or anybody else.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • Moral: When it comes to dating, looks shouldn’t matter.
  • Kel Mitchell (voice of Carlos) and Alisa Reyes (voice of LaCienega) are both former cast members of "All That".
  • Kel Mitchell would later have a recurring role on "One On One," a series that stars Kyla Pratt.
  • The episode was released on November 2 where Monsters, Inc. came out the same day in theaters.

Goofs[]

  • In this episode when Oscar and Felix were at the spa, Felix's feet weren't big, but in "Love Thy Neighbor", they were huge and I don't think they would grow that big.
  • Dijonay was with the guy with blond hair and LaCienega was with Nick, who Penny was supposed to be with until LaCienega took him after tricking Penny into checking on BeBe and CeCe, but when Penny and Carlos ran to take their seats on the roller coaster, Dijonay and LaCienega sat with different boys they weren't with respectively.
