The Forlorn Fox[1] is a character from the former America Sings attraction at Disneyland.
Background[]
This fox serves as a convict in the southern swamp. He would occasionally be seen singing "Down in the Valley", much to the fox's schemes, presumably planning to swindle victims who interact with him. Not much of this fox's personality is known other than serving as a convict. However, judging by the jail seen during this act can indicate that he is arrested for being a convict.
Development history[]
The forlorn fox was created for the America Sings attraction at Disneyland in the Tomorrowland section where he was placed in the "Going South" sequence, which opened on June 29, 1974. However, America Sings closed on April 10, 1988 in order to retheme the attraction to Innoventions, with the forlorn fox and most of the animatronics moved to Splash Mountain at the Critter Country section, which opened on July 17, 1989, where the fox was redressed into a completely different fox character.
As of 2020, Splash Mountain was announced for permanent closure to make way for a Princess and the Frog-themed attraction in a plan to remove all themes connected to Song of the South due to controversy surrounding the film itself which the attraction was based on. Therefore, it is currently unknown of what will replace the animatronic fox in the revamped version of the attraction. The Disneyland version of Splash Mountain permanently closed on May 31, 2023.
Appearances[]
America Sings[]
The forlorn fox was featured during the former attraction's first act, "Going South", where he is seen singing the "Down in the Valley" musical number. As he sings, he plays his guitar while sitting on a rocking chair presumably planning to swindle victims who interact with him. As he sings, a prison scenery appears in the background, showing that he is arrested for being a convict just before the song ends with The Weasel popping up. The next act after the fox is the scene with the River Belle Chorus and the Singing Bullfrogs.
