- Not to be confused with the similarly-titled Darkwing Duck episode.
"Fungus Among Us" is the nineteenth episode of Milo Murphy's Law, although it is actually the first season finale in production order. Premiering on September 30, 2017, it is the first part of a storyline that concludes in the second season's hour-length premiere "The Phineas and Ferb Effect". (Confusingly, however, the two holiday episodes that precede this, "Milo Murphy's Halloween Scream-A-Torium" and "A Christmas Peril", were held over and aired right after this episode.)
Synopsis[]
Milo, Cavendish, and Dakota travel back to 1965 and inspire the creation of Dr. Zone only to encounter a sinister plot to take over the world.
Plot[]
The episode starts with Milo, Melissa, and Zack in a hot air balloon that is falling to the ground. Milo then remembers the balloon has an emergency button and presses it, only for the trio to be dropped from the balloon. Luckily, the kids are saved thanks to Cavendish and Dakota, who was trying to get mustard off the steering wheel. Milo then receives a phone call from Dakota. The message says something was happening in 1965 and to "beware the intern". Cavendish believes they should investigate, and Milo asks to come with them. At his house, he shows Cavendish and Dakota the lost pilot episode of Doctor Zone with him in it and how he gave a letter to the creator Orton Mahlson to give Melissa and Zack 50 years later.
In 1965, Orton is in production of a show about the zoning commission, as he only knows it because his father was a zoning commissioner. The studio head tells him that he needs to get weird so his show will be a success. He goes outside and sees Milo, Cavendish, and Dakota arrive in their time machine. When he goes to meet them, Milo recognizes him and tells him all about his show. Back in the present, Zack and Melissa and encounters by Zack's former lumberjack boy back, who want them to get into a windowless van, making them run away.
Back in 1965, Orton prepares to start production of Doctor Zone. Milo, Cavendish, and Dakota soon encounter the intern and interrogate him, but he distracts them by pointing at someone with a purple shovel, who trips and causes a chain reaction that knocks out a young Tobias Trollhammer. This prompts a cast member to have Milo take his place. Meanwhile, Orton prepares for shooting and the intern asks him to enter a closet. Orton is then attacked and replaced by a imposter with a plant hand, who covers his with a gift box.
Back in the present, Zack and Melissa take cover in a nearby diner, where everyone inside weirdly asks them "how has your day been progressing?" As the two leave, they encounter another girl who ask them the same question. When they leave, the people in the diner ask her the question, and she is captured by vines. Back in the past, Milo prepares for the scene he was seen in from the pilot episode. But when he says his line, Murphy's Law causes the set to fall apart, revealing the real Orton tied up. The fake Orton then points a gun and reveals that he knows who Milo is. In the present, Zack and Melissa encounter Mr. Drako, who is actually an imposter. He uses spore to incapacitate the two as students grab them. Diogee watches this and runs away.
Back in the past, the fake Orton holds Milo, Cavendish, Dakota and the real Orton as gunpoint and removes his mask, revealing himself to be the intern, before pulling off a second mask and reveals himself to be a Pistachion. The Pistachion explains his name was Derek and was not only the son of King Pistachion, but the same Pistachion Dakota knocked off the Time Limo with the bag of clocks. Dakota thinks the group can handle him, but Derek reveals that several other studio employees were actually Pistachions in disguise. Derek then explains that after Dakota knocked him off the limo, he eventually left out of the time stream and landed in 1955, and spent the next 10 years planning his own overthrow of humanity. He explains his plan was to slowly replace people with Pistachions wearing masks until they outnumber everyone and overthrow humanity, only to learn the heroes have already left.
The group retreats to their time vehicle as the Pistachions chase after them and start attacking with large props Dakota then tries to warn the future and leaves the same message Milo got earlier. Cavendish is unable to start the time vehicle, but Milo jumpstarts it with a cattle prod and they escape. As the enter the time stream, the vehicles leaks time juice due to the Pistachion's attack, but Dakota hit the emergency return button before they run out. They arrive back in Milo's era two weeks after they left, but the vehicle is damaged. As Orton looks at Milo's school, a van shows up and Zack and Melissa come out as Milo goes to see them. As Cavendish and Dakota try to repair the vehicle and sponge the time juice on the ground, they discuss Derek's plan and how long it would take to actually work, before realizing he had 50 years to pull it off. As Milo tells "Zack" and "Melissa" about his adventure, they ask him to get into the van they arrived it, causing him to realize they were actually Pistachions in disguise and runs away with the others. They take cover in a bush and see Sara being kidnapped in another van.
The group follows the van to Lard World, which has been converted by the Pistachions into a prison for the captured humans. They disguise themselves as Pistachions and infiltrate the park. They find a warehouse where Sara is taken into a is replaced by a Pistachion disguised as her. The group then watches as she is taken to a cell where Milo's parents and friends are imprisoned as well. Milo is determined to help them, but Dakota and Cavendish explain they were outnumbered and they could fix everything with they can get another time vehicle. When Cavendish and Dakota decide to go to Brick and Savannah, they discover they too have been captured, and the Pistachions were smashing their time limo, causing the time juice to shoot out. At that moment, the railing they're on falls and exposes their cover, forcing them to retreat. As they are chased throughout the park, the group encounters Diogee, who comes with them. The group eventually reaches the sewers and escape in a boat anchored in the tunnel.
As the group travels through the sewers, Cavendish believes its hopeless since no more time vehicles exist in the current era and were stuck there. However, Milo believes they weren't stuck and that life has a way of working out. Dakota mentions that Professor Time, the inventor of time travel himself, had a similar ideology due to years of failures. Upon hearing this, Cavendish pulls out his device and realizes Professor Time lived in their current era and lived in the same city they were currently in. However, Dakota is skeptical since Professor Time won't invent time travel for another decade. But Milo thinks they can get him to invent it sooner. Cavendish discovers his address and the group finds a tunnel that leads them there, but a gate blocks the way there. After a failed attempt to break the gate by ramming into it, they encounter the mascot of Lard World, who reveals himself to be a giant Pistachion who then attacks them. While attacking the heroes, the giant Pistachion breaks a pipe and chain, which give Milo an idea. He has Orton attach the chain to the gate while he distracts the monster by spilling pistachios and stepping on them. The monster gets its arm caught in the pipe and pulls the gate out. The others pick up Milo and escape.
After crashing the boat, they continue to look for Professor Time, however, Cavendish's device in broken. Fortunately, Orton wrote down the address earlier and they eventually reach Professor Time's place. As they enter, they are soon caught in a net. At that moment, a shadow walks into the room, revealing Doofenshmirtz, who tells the group they were in his trap made specifically for the pizza delivery guy.
