We're in our own time. She came back from the future.
Justin to Max

"Future Harper" is the sixteenth episode of the second season of Wizards of Waverly Place. It is the thirty-seventh episode in the series overall.

Synopsis[]

Alex, Justin, and Max discover that a famous author (Rachel Dratch) is using their lives as the premise for her best-selling book series, Charmed and Dangerous. However, the wizards are shocked learning that the author, H.J. Darling, is really Harper from the future. It is revealed that she traveled back in time to write about wizards, since wizardry gets exposed in the future (the fault of one of the three Russos, as Future Harper hints). Alex is enraged that Harper has been writing books about her without permission. Future Harper tells Justin that he must convince Alex to give Past Harper permission to write the series. In the end of the episode, Selena Gomez and Rob Reiner comically talk about the importance of reading.

Trivia[]

  • H.J. Darling is a parody of J. K. Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter books. Harry Potter is often parodied in the show.
    • It is mentioned that there are 7 Charmed and Dangerous books, like there are 7 Harry Potter books.
  • Future Harper reveals secrets about the future, which are seen throughout the course of the series.
    • She reveals that Alex will date and break up with someone named Mason, who is later shown in the season 3 episode [[Alex Charms a Boy. The two would end up having an on-again-off-again relationship throughout seasons 3 and 4.
    • Future Harper also says that somebody in the room had a big big mouth, though there is some confusion on who actually exposed the secret, Alex or Justin. She later hints that Alex won. She gets nervous and then confuses Alex and Justin and Max misleading them to know it was Alex who won.
    • Harper actually begins writing stories on the Russo's in [[Alex Gives Up.
  • Another episode which features a character's birthday. In this case, it's Max's 13th birthday.
  • Future Harper is seen to still have a crush on Justin, even though she is dating Zeke by the time the series ends. This implies that they broke up some time after the events of the series and its sequel series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Harper also appeared to have a crush on Dominic in The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, further hinting towards the break up.
  • Future Harper creates a paradox by giving her younger self the hat, because the Harper that receives the hat would later go back in time and give her younger self the hat. However, Alex did say that she would give Future Harper the hat back.
    • This kind of paradox is known as the "Bootstrap paradox".
  • During a podcast with Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, Rachel Dratch revealed some information about the episode, including that her scenes only took two days to film.[1]
  • H.J Darling writes about the events of [[Crazy 10-Minute Sale, [[Movies and [[Justin's Little Sister.
  • Alex says "Russo's assemble!", which is a reference to the battle cry Avengers assemble!" from Marvel Comics.
  • Jerry and Theresa do not appear in this episode even though they are credited. They are both mentioned by Justin and Alex.
