Gary De'Snake is the tritagonist in Disney's 2025 upcoming animated feature film Zootopia 2.
Background[]
Personality[]
Not much can be made out about his personality, but so far, Gary's character is stated as "creepy, slithering, and highly venomous" on top of being a wanted criminal that Nick and Judy are pursuing via undercover detective work. Based on his recently released teaser poster demonstrating his identity as a character, his motivations for entering into Zootopia are "unclear". However, he also is shown to be "extremely optimistic", especially when it comes to conversing and communicating with others, as he's extremely "talkative".
Physical appearance[]
Gary appears to be based on a Sunda Island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis), a species of snake known for its vibrant coloration, with cerulean blue scales covering his body, bulbous yellow eyes with black vertical slit pupils, and a single fang on the right side of a noticeably wide jaw. He lacks the red tail of the real life Sunda Island pit viper. Additionally, he is 10 meters long, approximately 33 feet in length rounded up, making him far larger than any species of real life venomous snake, and reaching a length rivaling that of the reticulated python. Compared to other animals in Zootopia, he is the only character to not wear clothing or accessories of any sorts if one does not account for the animals found in the naturalist club.
Trivia[]
- Gary is the first reptile to appear in the Zootopia franchise, not counting Pascal's cameo in the first film, in addition to the chameleon agents and the gecko taxi driver in the movie's teaser poster, as well as the supposed tortoise found in the Inside Snout 2 parody poster. He is also the first snake to physically appear in the franchise in any capacity.
- Gary also shares his name with one of the two wolves working at the Cliffside Asylum in the first film.
- Gary makes a surprise Easter egg as one of the woven tapestries in the end credits of Moana 2, thus making a reference to Zootopia 2 being Disney's next film.
- Even though Gary might be based off of a Sunda Island pit viper, blue is actually known to be a rare color amongst this particular species. Green and yellow are both more common, but blue is more well known due to its rarity and appeal. The blue results from a recessive gene that removes yellow pigment, causing the scale structure to reflect only blue light.
- Coincidentally, Ke Huy Quan had also voiced Han in Kung Fu Panda 4, another character based on a Sunda species - a Sunda pangolin - who also appears to be a criminal.
- Gary makes some appearances as decorations and is advertised in Shanghai Disneyland's Chinese New Year event in celebration of the Year of the Snake (2025).
- During CinemaCon, Gary's full name was discovered to be: Gary De'Snake.
- Ke Huy Quan, the voice of Gary, was the announcer for details behind Zootopia 2 during the event.
