Geppetto

Geppetto is a character who appears in the 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio. In this film, Gepetto made Pinocchio in the memory of his late son and the clocks he carves in his shop are mementos to his late wife.

He is based on both the character from the original story by Carlo Collodi and the 1940 animated film.

Role in the film[]

Geppetto is first seen inside his workshop working on a puppet and while working on it, he sings the musical number "When He Was Here With Me" while Jiminy Cricket gets a closer look at him working on the puppet. Feeling satisfied of the puppet he made, Jiminy comments, "Not too shabby" while observing Geppetto only to find Signore Rizzi knocking outside his workshop. Geppetto then warns Rizzi that his shop is already closed at 6:04 in the evening, which he replies to Geppetto to sell him a cuckoo clock with a duck and alligator on it, which he replies to the customer that the clock is not for sale and thus he cannot sell any of his cuckoo clocks to Signore Rizzi just before Rizzi leaves giving out a disappointed review to Geppetto just as he continues talking to Pinocchio about him being a real boy. Figaro approaches how owner, telling him to be happy this time while trying to think of a name for the puppet which he names the puppet "Pinocchio" which Geppetto feels satisfied of the name. He then turns on the music box while introducing Pinocchio to Figaro and Cleo. After having fun with Pinocchio, Geppetto realizes that it is bedtime, just as he says goodnight to his cat Figaro and his goldfish Cleo just before going to bed in his room. Geppetto then goes to his room and tells his cat Figaro to look at Pinocchio in the moonlight, explaining to his cat that he almost looks like a real boy to which Geppetto sees a wishing star at night, just as he wishes for Pinocchio to come to life which the Blue Fairy casts a spell on the picture of a real boy to Pinocchio, suddenly bringing him to life.

Geppetto's wish suddenly comes true just as the Blue Fairy arrives at Geppetto's workshop where she brings Pinocchio to life, much to Geppetto's shock which he wakes up asking his cat Figaro and his goldfish Cleo to know if they heard something which he hears Pinocchio who was brought to life, much to his shock. Geppetto asks his son to know how he can talk which he explains to him that the Blue Fairy granted his father's wish onto him. Seeing that he can talk and move like a real boy, Geppetto feels overjoyed that his puppet is a real by and upon staring at his son, he happily dances with Pinocchio by singing the musical number "Pinocchio, Pinocchio". After celebrating, Geppetto returns to bed just as Pinocchio sleeps with him so that he can get ready for school.

The next day, Geppetto then helps Pinocchio get ready for school by giving him his lesson book as well as an apple for his teacher, teaching him the way to get back to his workshop just as Pinocchio plans to go to school by himself, telling him to be back home by dinner time while giving Sofia the Seagull her breakfast. Later during dinner time, Geppetto prepares a dinner for Pinocchio and Figaro only to find out that Pinocchio is not home, leading him, Figaro, and Cleo to find Pinocchio so he can return home for dinner. That night, Geppetto wanders around the village one rainy night to search for his son Pinocchio but could not find any sign of him. Sofia the Seagull then arrives and shows Geppetto a poster of Pleasure Island, the place where Pinocchio is at, which Geppetto feels worried that Pinocchio is in danger.

The next day, Pinocchio reveals that Geppetto sold all of his clocks to earn money to buy a boat and then use it in a plan to search for Pinocchio which as he ended up at sea, Geppetto still could not find him until he saw Sofia, Pinocchio, and Jiminy on their way to get to Geppetto. Geppetto then sails his boat to get to Pinocchio who recaps of his adventures he had the past day just as Geppetto is excited for Pinocchio to return home only for Geppetto's boat to be swallowed by Monstro, the giant sea monster. Pinocchio encounters his father and reunites with him after not seeing him for a long time, alongside Figaro and Cleo. When Pinocchio starts a fire inside Monstro, Geppetto adds oil from the bucket to make the fire inside the mouth on the shipwreck large so that Monstro can wake up, causing a bigger fire to emerge inside Monstro, causing the sea monster to sneeze out Geppetto and Pinocchio inside Monstro.

After Monstro sneezes very loudly due to the fire, Geppetto's boat get sneeze out of Monstro, but gets smashed in half as Pinocchio rescues Geppetto who was engulfed by a wave. Geppetto, Jiminy, Figaro, Pinocchio, and Cleo escape from Monstro who chases them across the ocean seeing a cove from a distance in a plan to escape from Monstro. Pinocchio escapes with them, causing Monstro to slam his head onto a wall. Having escaped Monstro, Pinocchio approaches his father, who is badly injured and cries believing that he is dead, alongside Figaro and Cleo who mourn him; as Pinocchio sadly sings "When You Wish Upon a Star" as a magical tear from Pinocchio drops onto Geppetto, just as he is brought back to life.

After Geppetto is brought back to life, Pinocchio happily notices his father back to life, alongside Figaro and Cleo who happily see their owner back to life. As Geppetto regains his conscious, he thanks Pinocchio for saving him as well as praising him for being brave, truthful, and unselfish so that he can become a real boy, just as Geppetto happily reunites with Pinocchio. Geppetto then takes Pinocchio (who suddenly transforms into a real boy) back home, alongside Figaro and Cleo as Jiminy narrates of how Pinocchio became a real boy for proving himself brave, truthful, and unselfish.
