Ghibli ga Ippai Collection (ジブリがいっぱい COLLECTION lit. A Lot of Ghibli Collection) is a series of Studio Ghibli-related and endorced home media releases distributed by Walt Disney Studios Japan and/or Pony Canyon that has spanned since 1997 in Japan, and in the Early-2000's in a small number of Chinese regions.

Background[]

Japan[]

In 1996, when Studio Ghibli signed a business alliance with The Walt Disney Company to distribute and market their films worldwide, the deal allowed for VHS reissues of all of Studio Ghibli's movies in Japan by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, which were previously released by their then-owner Tokuma Shoten under the "Animage Video" label. These releases would be branded as the "Ghibli ga Ippai Collection", and the re-releases started with My Neighbor Totoro on June 27, 1997. At the time, the only VHS that wouldn't see a re-release would be Ocean Waves, as it was excluded as part of the Disney deal due to it's status as a TV movie, although this rule was later revoked. Laserdisc releases would also be excluded and would still be released by Tokuma Shoten. DVD releases would also be excluded as part of the rule, but this was revoked as well. Newer movies would also see releases under the label by BVHE Japan beginning with Princess Mononoke. Once again, the Laserdisc rule was applied and so the movie was released under the branding by Tokuma Shoten.

Beginning in November 2000 with My Neighbors the Yamadas, the range expanded to DVD releases, as well as rental releases. Rental versions of these releases were distributed through Pony Canyon, in partnership with Disney. Pony Canyon have also distributed a small number of documentaries under the label as well.

In 2007, the label extended to Blu-Ray Discs, although the company's movies wouldn't see a release on the format until Ponyo in December 2009.

In addition to the documentaries, Pony Canyon also released Earwig and the Witch on Blu-Ray and DVD under the label, due to the film being entirely funded by NHK.

Usage in other regions[]

Taiwan[]

In late-1999, the label extended to Taiwan, with releases distributed through Buena Vista Home Entertainment Taiwan on DVD and VCD formats. Following BVHE Taiwan's closure of their standalone unit in 2006, Deltamac's Taiwanese subsidiary took over distribution of both Disney and Ghibli releases. Some of the later DVD releases have no Disney branding on them, although the Blu-Ray releases retain them.

The partnership continues to this day after Disney exited from the physical Taiwanese market in Early-2021 due to the launch of Disney+ in Asia, with releases from 2020 onwards lacking Disney branding on the back of the packaging.

Hong Kong[]

Hong Kong based distributor Intercontinental Video also releases products under this label under a separate deal with Studio Ghibli, but they aren't branded as Disney products or mention them on the back of the packaging. Before the label was introduced, a few early releases like Spirited Away. The Cat Returns, and Howl's Moving Castle were branded under the Buena Vista Home Entertainment umbrella by Intercontinental Video, as Disney held the rights to both movies in the region.

The partnership continues to this day, even after Disney exited from the physical Hong Kong market on June 30, 2021.

China[]

Chinese based Excel Video releases products under the label under license from Disney/Buena Vista.
