This article is about the character from Marvel Comics. For other characters, see Ghost.

They weaponized me. I stole for them. Spied for them. I killed for them. And in exchange for my soul... they were going to cure me. They lied.
―Ava Starr[src]

Ghost (real name Ava Starr) is a Marvel Comics supervillain that appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in Ant-Man and the Wasp. She has the ability to phase and become intangible. By 2027, Ava has taken control of her phasing powers and is recruited by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to join Bucky Barnes, John Walker, Taskmaster and Yelena Belova to form a group known as the Thunderbolts.

Ghost was created by David Michelinie and Bob Layton.

Background

Personality

Ghost's main goal is to save herself from an unspeakable fate, and her determination to do so is such that she will endanger small children and manipulate the Quantum Realm. She can also get emotional, even though she has good reason to. Ghost is also very perceptive, something demonstrated by how she calmly interrogated Ant-Man, Wasp, and Dr. Hank Pym, before speaking in a firm, biting tone and then speaking aggressively when things became more serious. After she was saved, however, she came to see her own life as worthless, thinking she deserved to die for what she had done to prevent just that, though her consolation with her adopted father seems to have mitigated this somewhat.

Powers and Abilities

  • Mutated Physiology: After Ava was blasted by quantum energy from her parents' laboratory explosion, her DNA was altered and her cells supercharged, giving her some powers that partially break the laws of physics. S.H.I.E.L.D. call it molecular disequilibrium. Every cell in Ava's body was torn apart and stitched back together, over and over, until Janet Van Dyne transferred some of her quantum energy into Ava, stabilizing her condition.
    • Invisibility: Ava can cause the biopolymers in her body to lose their ability to reflect light, rendering her invisible to normal light and human sight. With more increased concentration, she can render herself completely invisible along the electromagnetic spectrum.
    • Intangibility: Due to her quantum mutation, Ava is able to phase through solid matter, such as walls and doors, or to increase her density to become near-invulnerable. She is able to use this offensively, allowing her to phase through people to cause internal damage.
    • Enhanced Strength: Due to her mutation, Ava became stronger than ordinary humans, being able to eliminate a sniper with a single punch.
    • Enhanced Durability: Ava has a great resistances to physical injuries due to her mutation. She is capable of withstanding multiple blows by both Ant-Man and the Wasp.
    • Enhanced Speed: Ava can at such a high speed he could barely be seen by the human eye.
  • Master Martial Artist: Due to her training with S.H.I.E.L.D., Ava is a master martial artist, having skill in several fighting styles, such as Kickboxing, Judo, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo. She is capable of holding her own against multiple enemies with powers like Ant-Man, Wasp, and Taskmaster.
  • Knife Mastery: Ava is very skilled at using knives in combat.
  • Master Acrobat: She is an skilled acrobat, capable of numerous complex maneuvers and feats.
  • Master Marksman: Ava has also demonstrated proficient use of a firearms.
  • Master Spy: Ava is a dangerous secret agent trained in espionage, stealth, disguise, infiltration, and demolitions.

Appearances

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ghost appears in Ant-Man and the Wasp as the main antagonist alongside her adopted father, Bill Foster. The daughter of scientist Elihas Starr, a former colleague of Hank Pym, Ava was affected with quantum instability after a Quantum Tunnel created by her father exploded, which ended up killing both of her parents. Her condition caused her to periodically phase out of existence. While wearing a specialized suit provided by S.H.I.E.L.D., she could control and even utilize this ability. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. took advantage of Ava's condition, making her a convert operative not unlike Black Widow and Hawkeye. Eventually following the organization's desolution, Ava came under the sole care of Dr. Bill Foster, who provided her the means to prolong her life and resources needed in order to stabilize herself. However, what she needed were energies from the Quantum Realm, and need for this brought her into conflict with Hank Pym, his daughter Hope, and their ally Scott Lang, and even threatened the life of Pym's wife Janet.

Secret Invasion

In the fight between G'iah and Gravik, Ghost's powers and shape are replicated.

Thunderbolts*

Ghost returns in this film, set 9 years after the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp and had conflicts with the Pym/van Dyne family and Sonny Burch. By this time, she is recruited by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, along with Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent and others, where they become a team known as the Thunderbolts.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Ghost was an Iron Man villain who became a thief after being exploited and having their life ruined by corporate-executives and white-collar criminals. His powers came from his suit and technology which were all of his own design and being constantly upgraded to be on par with Iron-Man's tech.
  • This is the first incarnation of Ghost to be female.
