The Ghost Dog is a character from the Haunted Mansion attraction at the Disney Parks.
Background[]
Physical appearance[]
Being non-corporeal, the ghost dog has a skinny structure with pale blue fur all around its body in consistency with the other ghosts. It is shown to have a skeletal appearance judging by the transparent body it has. Very little is known about the dog which lived in the graveyard prior to its death.
Appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
The ghost dog can be located in the graveyard scene of the Haunted Mansion in all three versions of the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, and Tokyo Disneyland respectively. It is often located in the area where it is seen next to the Mummy and the Deaf Ghost within the Mansion grounds.
Haunted Mansion Holiday[]
The ghost dog reprises its role in the seasonal overlay of the Haunted Mansion attraction. It functions identical to its original overlay, except that the area where it is located within is covered with snow.
Other appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
The ghost dog appears on the cover of the third issue of the Haunted Mansion comics by Slave Labor Graphics, seen next to the Mummy and the Deaf Ghost, recreating a scene from the attraction.
Trivia[]
- The dog has a striking resemblance to the Caretaker's Dog, due to his similar-looking design, only that the dog itself has no known owner.
- The depiction of the Caretaker's Dog in the 2003 film adaptation of The Haunted Mansion and its 2023 reboot as a ghostly canine may have inspired the regular ghost dog located on its own in the original attraction.
- Cast members of the Disney Parks (more specifically those in the Magic Kingdom) writing the Ghost Gallery stories would often refer to this dog as "Loki" (in reference to the god from Norse mythology) where they made up the origin stories of the ghost dog being trapped in the mummy's tomb, leading to its death.
- The Haunted Mansion's pet cemetery has two gravestones of deceased dogs: one which is named "Big Jake" and another which is named "Buddy". It is likely that the ghost dog seen physically in the ride is one of them.
