Ginger is a major character featured in the 2020 Disney+ original film Black Beauty.
Background[]
Ginger is one of Black Beauty's fellow friends who lived with her at Birtwick Stables alongside Merrylegs. During her life, she became friends with Beauty ever since she adapted her life at Birtwick and Beauty started liking her so that she has company with other horses. However, after a fire broke out, Ginger faced another challenge in adapting her new life at the Earlshall estate. She is shown to have a like to people who ride on her kindly such as the case of George Winthorp treating horses in a kind manner, unlike Georgina who puts too much pressure when riding on horses. However, after Beauty was retired from Earlshall, Mrs. Winthorp secretly sold Ginger to another carriage at New York which Black Beauty was not aware of just before she passed away. Ginger's death broke Beauty's heart and had a negative impact for her throughout her life, as she was Beauty's best friend who served as a fellow horse during her life at Birtwick.
Role in the film[]
Ginger is one of the two horses at Birtwick Stables whom Black Beauty describes as one of her friends, alongside Merrylegs. Eventually, she, Beauty, and Merrylegs became friends, reminding Beauty of the other horses she had in the wild, giving her company. The next day, Ginger chases James in Beauty's pen which Beauty did the other day, alongside Merrylegs and Beauty herself.
After a fire broke out at Birtwick, Ginger was one of the horses who were surrounded by a fire in the Stables, leading Jo to rescue Beauty, Ginger, Merrylegs, and all the other surviving horses trapped by the fire. Jo was able to rescue Ginger and the other horses. The next day, Ginger came with Black Beauty on her way to Earlshall Park, wondering what the new stables might be like. Beauty began to narrate that Ginger has been sold to George Winthorp while she had been leased before narrating about Georgina who began to put pressure on Beauty, unaware of the injuries she is causing to Beauty, which it is shown that George treats horses like Ginger kindly unlike his sister Georgina.
The next day, Jo approaches George riding on Ginger, telling him that she is ready to race and after fraternizing with Jo, George began to ride on Ginger for the race. During the race, Ginger and her rider were able to win the race. However, after the race, Beauty began to felt emotional that she would miss Ginger after she was about to be sold to another place, much to Ginger who is sad that she would miss her. As Beauty adapted her life in New York City to look for Jo, she met Ginger one last time where she couldn't believe how much she changed where she told her that she won many prizes and then she then told her that George's mother sold her without knowing.
As Beauty adapts her life in New York City, she spends her last moments with Ginger just before she tells Beauty that she and Merrylegs were the only friends she ever had just before Ginger passes away shortly. The next day, Beauty sees Ginger's dead body on another carriage and upon noticing this, this made Beauty cry that she lost a fellow horse to accompany her, making her heartbroken throughout Beauty's life.
