Gonzalo is a supporting antagonist who appears in the 2021 Disney live-action film, Jungle Cruise, based on the ride of the same name. He is a conquistador serving as one of Lope de Aguirre's men who set off in an attempt to retrieve the Arrowhead from the Amazon only to be cursed by the jungle which defended its natural environment.
Background[]
Gonzalo serves as one of Don Lope de Aguirre's men. He serves as one of the three cursed conquistadors who were affiliated with Aguirre during their encounter with the Guardians of the Tree to Life; however, during a war between the conquistadors and the guardians, Gonzalo became imprisoned with the rest of Aguirre's henchmen. Years later during a curse, Gonzlo was fused with vines and roots all over him along with the rest of the conquistadors affiliated with Aguirre in a plan to seek revenge for those who take the Arrowhead.
Development[]
Like all the cursed conquistadors that appear in the Jungle Cruise film, the vine and root effects used for Gonzalo were created through the process of CGI which was used throughout the film. After the scenes where the conquistadors appear were filmed, the visual CGI effects were provided on Aguirre and his conquistadors throughout the film (in this case, the vines and roots on Gonzalo were created through CGI). The visual effects were done by Industrial Light & Magic, the company that provided visual effects for the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.[1]
Role in the film[]
When Don Lope de Aguirre and his men went on an expedition for the Tears of the Moon, Gonzalo and the rest of the conquistadors followed alongside their leader where he was struck by a snake but Aguirre saved him from being killed. After Aguirre was founded by the Guardians of the Tree and nursed back to life, he demanded that the tribe give him the sacred Arrowhead and the key to the Tears of the Moon. When they refused to do so, Gonzalo and the rest of the conquistadors attacked the tribe in war with them. However, the jungle defended its natural environment from intruders where Aguirre and his conquistadors were imprisoned in the region of Lagrimas de Cristal; Gonzalo, Aguirre, and the rest of the conquistadors, were punished by the jungle for stealing the Arrowhead where the conquistadors remained imprisoned for many years.
Years later, Prince Joachim and his soldiers arrive at the area where Aguirre and his conquistadors were punished by the jungle for stealing the Arrowhead just as a curse begins to occur with the conquistadors coming to life. At this time, Gonzalo became fused with roots and vines all around him and started coming to life, along with the rest of Aguirre's conquistadors who are in possession of the Arrowhead.
Later, when Frank, Lily, and McGregor arrive at the Puka Michuna territory, Gonzalo and the other conquistadors came back to life and followed Aguirre in an attempt to steal the Arrowhead. As an ambush occurs, Gonzalo emerges from a hut via vines and branches as Lily becomes trapped during the ambush while Frank takes on the conquistador fused with vines and branches while Lily manages to free herself from the vines. Gonzalo later grabs another tribesmen while Frank and Lily take on Melchor and Sancho. After Lily and her brother escape with the Arrowhead with Frank surviving the ambush, Aguirre devises a plan for his men in a plan to take the Arrowhead from Lily much to Aguirre's revenge.
At the La Luna Rota area where Aguirre and his conquistadors were punished by the jungle and after Frank, Lily, and McGregor find the sacred tree containing the Tears of the Moon, Gonzalo and the other conquistadors chase Lily while Frank shows the petal to Aguirre. Gonzalo arrives into the La Quila and attacks Frank alongside Sancho who enters the ship while Aguirre urges Frank to give him the petal while being ambushed by conquistadors. After Joachim is killed by falling debris during battle, Frank is still under attack by Gonzalo, Sancho, and Aguirre who demand him to give him the petal to which as they see the petal carried by Lily and McGregor, they attempt to go after Lily and McGregor. However, as Frank crashes his ship into the pillar to block the river, Gonzalo ended up being grabbed by the vines and was later petrified alongside Frank and the other conquistadors. Lily manages to revive Frank and save his life using a petal of the Tear of the Moon to bring him back to life.
