The Graveyard Owls are characters from the original Haunted Mansion attraction at the Disney Parks.
History[]
Background[]
These two owls are a pair of owls that are found in the graveyard area of the Haunted Mansion. They would often be seen sitting on a tree branch where they would occasionally hoot along with a group of ghost musicians playing "Grim Grinning Ghosts", alongside a group of cats and a howling canine from a distance.
Development history[]
Concept art for the original Haunted Mansion attraction featured an unused scene of the owls appearing alongside the Raven, hinting that the latter was to appear in said scene but the Raven did not appear in the area with the owls for unknown reasons.[1]
Appearances[]
The Haunted Mansion[]
In each version of the attraction, the owls are encountered in the graveyard area where they are seen standing on a tree branch hooting along with a group of ghostly musicians while a group of cats meow and join in the singing while a canine howls in the background during the "Grim Grinning Ghosts" sequence. The owls' heads would go up and down with their eyes being reflective throughout the attraction.
Haunted Mansion Holiday[]
The owls reprise their role in the classic overlay of the attraction, albeit their tree is decorated with Halloween-themed Christmas lights.
Other Appearances[]
Chibi Tiny Tales[]
A graveyard owl appeared in the short "Haunted Mansion Hire" where it is seen perched on one of the trees.
Trivia[]
- The graveyard owls are one of the few characters who are seen in physical form in the attraction with no indication of the owls being deceased or in paranormal form. The way the owls have bright eyes which appear to glow is a possible reflection of what real-life owls have.
- The way the owls stretch their necks in the Haunted Mansion attraction is similar to owls from certain cartoons like the owl from The Skeleton Dance or the Accordion Owl from Alice in Wonderland.
- The owls appear to resemble real-life great horned owls (Bubo virginianus), judging by their head design.
