Grover Underwood is the tritagonist in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is a satyr who has a strong connection with Percy Jackson and acts as his protector.
Background[]
Personality[]
Grover is slightly self-conscious about his abilities as a protector. While he can be fun-loving and happy, he is always concerned for those around him and their well-being. Grover is usually supportive of others, especially Percy, whom he sees as his best friend. He still shows a heroic side whenever he is shoved against a wall and will speak his mind when he is forced to do so.
Physical appearance[]
Grover is depicted as a tall Indian boy, who despite looking young, is actually 24. Since satyrs mature half as fast as humans, he is the satyr equivalent of a 12-year-old human. His outfit consists of a yellow shirt, blue jacket, and baggy beige pants that cover his goat legs.
Role in the series[]
The Lightning Thief[]
Grover Underwood came from a long line of satyrs who hoped to go searching for the god Pan. Among one of his first tasks was to transport demigods to Camp Half-Blood for safekeeping. He was traveling with Luke Castellan, Annabeth Chase, and Thalia Grace, when they were attacked just before arriving at the camp. Thalia gave up her life to save everyone and was turned into a tree by her father Zeus. This moment scarred Grover who considered this one of his biggest failures and the reason why he didn't earn his searcher's license.
He was later assigned by Chiron, under the guise of Mr. Brunner, to keep an eye on Percy Jackson, the son of Sally, and who they suspected was a child of one of the Big Three. Grover attended Yancy Academy with Percy and became really good friends with him. He further taught him Greek mythology using Mythomagic cards. While at the museum, Percy's powers suddenly awaken after an encounter with Nancy Bobofit. He is attacked by Mrs. Dodds, who in actuality was the fury Alecto, but she was unintentionally defeated by Percy. Upon Alecto's disappearance, Grover and Mr. Brunner denied her existence.
Grover later insinuated to the headmaster of Yancy that Percy intentionally hurt Nancy, but this was so that he could be rushed out of school and away from danger. Grover would later follow Percy and Sally to their beach house where he revealed to the latter that he is a satyr. He tells Percy that he had been keeping an eye on him this whole time and that the attack at the museum was unexpected because of the Mist, the thing keeping humans from seeing monsters. While trying to reach Camp Half-Blood, the group is attacked by a Minotaur and Sally seemingly perishes.
Grover manages to drag Percy back to camp where he is resituated. Still feeling guilty over how things have turned out, Grover begins to question his future. After a talk with the Cloven Council, Grover discovers that Sally is alive and brings this information up to Chiron and Dionysus. They warn Grover against telling Percy about this, but when Percy is offered his quest and destination to the Underworld, Grover tells him that Sally is alive, motivating to go on his quest.
Grover and Percy are soon joined by Annabeth where they make their way to the city and take a bus to their destination Los Angeles by bus. They are attacked by Alecto and chased to Auntie Em's Garden Gnome Emporium where they have a confrontation with Medusa. During this time, Grover senses tension between Percy and Annabeth and coaxes them into acting calmer around each other, as they are stuck on this quest together.
They later fight Echidna and the Chimera on the Amtrack and get chased to the St. Louis Gateway Arch before escaping. They then run across Ares who suspiciously offers them safe passage on the condition that they get his shield from Hephaestus. While Percy and Annabeth go and get it, Grover is kept by Ares as collateral where the satyr claims to be a fan of his work. As the two talk, Grover seemingly gets Ares to infer that one of his own children, specifically Clarisse La Rue stole the Master Bolt.
When Percy and Annabeth return, the group is sent by Ares to Las Vegas to meet with Hermes at the Lotus Casino. Upon entering the group hastily try to find Hermes and leave, but Grover is distracted by another satyr named Augustus who claims that he has found Pan. Grover follows him, but is soon overcome by the casino's allure and forgets his quest and friends. Luckily, Percy and Annabeth are able to retain enough willpower to rescue Grover and escape the casino via Hermes' taxi cab which teleports them to Santa Monica.
After Percy acquires escape pearls, the group make their way to Procrustes water bed store and find the entrance to the Underworld. They upset Charon who sicks Cerberus on the group, resulting in Grover briefly getting eaten. He is spat out, but loses one of the pearls. Grover uses flying shoes given to them by Luke to navigate the Underworld, only for Annabeth having to make a quick exit due to the Asphodel Fields. Grover is nearly sucked into the Pit of Tartarus, but is rescued by Percy who discovers that he had the Bolt on his this whole time. Grover later accompanies him to meet Hades who has Sally, but not the Bolt.
Grover and Percy return to the surface where the latter faces off against Ares and wins. Upon doing so, Hades' helm is reclaimed by Alecto and Grover and Annabeth return to Camp Half-Blood while Percy returns the Bolt to Mount Olympus. The quest is considered a success, but everyone discovers too late that Luke was the one who stole the Bolt and he flees camp. In the end, Grover is finally given his searcher's license for the successful quest and he Percy and Annabeth promise to see each other next year.
