"Gus' Fortune" is the first segment of the thirty-seventh episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

After playing with a paper fortune teller, Gus is told he will die the next day.

Plot[]

A paper fortune teller gets blown off a docked boat by the wind and is carried all the way to Third Street School where it is found by the Recess Gang. Butch stops them from using it and tells them about Stinky Peterson who used a paper fortune teller and his fortune resulted in something indescribable to happen to him. The Gang ignores him and proceed to use it. T.J.'s says that he will pass a test with "flying colors", Spinelli will find riches, Gretchen will go to "an exotic land", but Gus' says that "tomorrow will be his last". The rest of the Gang laugh it off as they do not think any of the fortunes will come true.

Later, T.J. discovers that he got an A on his test, Spinelli finds a $50 bill on her boot and Gretchen is told via letter that she won a contest and will be traveling overseas. While everyone is excited, Gus realizes that his fortune will come true and that tomorrow will indeed be his last. He decides to build a trap that will capture school bully Gelman once and for all. However, shortly before that happens, T.J. learns that Miss Grotke mislabeled his test, the $50 turns out to belong to Ashley A., and Gretchen is denied her trip due to her age. They go to stop Gus, but his trap ends up capturing Miss Finster instead. Nevertheless, Gelman is frightened by the fact that Gus even dared to make one and promises to leave the other small kids alone.
