Gustavo is a supporting character, who appears in the 2022 Disney+ original film Sneakerella. He is an elderly gardener who is a neighbor of El, whose home is located at an urban garden in New York City.

Background[]

Personality[]

Gustavo is an elderly man who shows a friendly personality to anyone who he meets such as El Morales. Although he occasionally asks for help while taking care of his garden, he also takes care of the plants by himself. In addition to his duty as a gardener, he also supports El in select situations such as giving him a magical car to help him and Sami get to the Gala at King6. In addition to this, Gustavo occasionally speaks Spanish, in addition to being fluent in English. In addition to this, he also serves as the narrator of the film, often narrating the story about El's life throughout the film - albeit offscreen.

Role in the film[]

Gustavo is first seen during the prologue of the film where he is seen observing El working at his shoe store while Gustavo himself is heard narrating the story. El approaches later approaches him in his urban garden, where he is seen holding a bag of fertilizer for his garden. Seeing that the fertilizer is too heavy to carry, El offers him to help bring the fertilizer to his garden and while caring for the plants, Gustavo shows El the roses that his late mother planted just before Sami plans to wrap up the conversation so they can go to the train station before they miss their ride, not noticing one of the roses blooming. He later appears in his garden observing El starting his relationship with Kira just before the two exit. In El's flashback, Gustavo is seen closing the door when Trey escorts El's mother, Rosie to a taxi just before leaving. As El continued drawing sneakers in his shoe store, he finds Gustavo instead of his mother, where he watched over him where it was found out that El's mother, Rosie died.

After Zelly and Stacy lock up El in the inventory room in Laces and El felt frustrated that he could not find an exit to escape, Gustavo opens the metal door to help him get to the Gala just before Sami approaches him. Gustavo recaps that a little faith helped El escape, telling him that sneakers are the most important ingredient of all to make it happen, telling him to not give up just before singing the musical number "Life is What You Make It", showing El and Sami the importance of having good things that come from good intentions. Gustavo shows El and Sami a car for them to drive to the Gala, but warns them to be home by midnight. After El began sulking after Darius accused him for lying to him about being a sneaker designer, Gustavo sees the drawing of a sneaker that El was going to show at Sneakercon, just as he narrates of what would become of El's dream, narrating if he had one more chance to fix the mistake so that he could clear his bad reputation.

One year later, Gustavo is taking care of his tomatoes in his urban garden just as El salutes him while giving a gesture just before walking out with Kira during a reprise of "Life is What You Make It". At the end of the film, he narrates of how El found his true love Kira, living happily ever after.
