"Hail Holy Queen" is a song performed my Deloris Van Cartier and the Sisters in the film, Sister Act. It is performed during the Sunday Mass. It starts out as a traditional choir until it goes into a gospel and rock and roll tone thanks of Deloris' influence after taking over as the choir director.
Lyrics[]
Hail holy Queen enthroned above
Oh, Maria
Hail Mother of Mercy and of love
Oh, Maria
Triumph all ye cherubim
Sing with us ye seraphim
Heaven and earth resound the hymn
Salve, salve, salve Regina
Hail holy Queen enthroned above
Oh, Maria
Hail Mother of Mercy and of love
Oh, Maria
Triumph all ye cherubim
Sing with us ye seraphim
Heaven and earth resound the hymn
Salve, salve, salve Regina
Our life, our sweetness here below
Oh, Maria
Our hope in sorrow and in woe
Oh, Maria
Triumph all ye cherubim
Sing with us ye seraphim
Heaven and earth resound the hymn
Salve, salve, salve Regina
Alleluia
Mater ad mater inter marata
Sanctus sanctus dominus
Virgo respice mater ad spice
Sanctus sanctus dominus
Alleluia
Our life, our sweetness here below
Oh, Maria
Our hope in sorrow and in woe
Oh, Maria
Triumph all ye cherubim
Sing with us ye seraphim
Heaven and earth resound the hymn
Salve, salve, salve Regina
Salve Regina, salve Regina
Trivia[]
The song was based on the German hymn "Gegrüßet seist du, Königin" by German priest Johann Georg Seidenbusch, who first published it in his 1687 devotional book Marianischer Schnee-Berg. The modern melody first appeared in the 1736 hymnal Geistliche Spiel- und Weckuhr, and Melchior Ludwig Herold's 1808 hymnal Choralmelodien zum Heiligen Gesänge contained the version that is standard today. The English translation "Hail, Holy Queen enthroned above" first appeared in The Roman Missal in 1884.
A cover of the song under the title "Salve Regina" by Filipino artists Leah Navarro, Jacqui Magno, Mitch Valdes, Pinky Marquez and Marivic Benedicto was included in the 2002 Christian album Mother of All.[1]
