- “Hanging Tree: Everybody scream! Everybody scream!
Skeletons: In our town of Halloween...” - ―Hanging Tree and Skeletons
The Hanging Tree and Skeletons are characters featured in Tim Burton's 1993 stop-motion film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Background[]
The Hanging Tree is an anthropomorphic oak tree without leaves all over him. He is depicted with a scary face resembling typical interpretations of trees with scary faces in dark forests - specifically in fictional media. He has two branch-like arms and is also capable of using his own roots as feet.
The Tree is voiced by an uncredited Thurl Ravenscroft in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Dee Bradley Baker voiced him in The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge video game.
On the Hanging Tree are five white anthropomorphic skeletons hanging on nooses carried by the Tree's branches. There are two skeletons on the left side of the Hanging Tree followed by three other skeletons featured on the right side of him. All of the skeletons are identical to each other and speak in a male voice.
It is unknown who voiced the skeletons singing their only line throughout the entire film during the "This is Halloween" sequence.Appearances[]
The Nightmare Before Christmas[]
After the Big Witch and Little Witch sing their parts during the musical number "This is Halloween, the Hanging Tree appears with five skeletons hanging around him while singing "Everybody scream, everybody scream!" while marching in front of the camera and after the Tree sings his parts, the five skeletons hanging on his branches sing their part "In our town of Halloween..." just before it loops to the Clown with the Tear-Away Face singing his part. Later during the Halloween celebration, the Hanging Tree and his skeletons singing the line "Won't ya please make way for a very special guy?" just as Sally hides behind the Tree and two of the skeletons. As Jack Skellington transforms from a pumpkin-headed scarecrow to a skeleton himself and Jack rises from the fountain, the Hanging Tree happily smiles while his skeletons applaud for him alongside Sally just as the other citizens applaud Jack as all the inhabitants of Halloween Town celebrate Halloween together. After the celebration, the Hanging Tree and his five skeletons are seen listening to the citizens praising Jack for doing great during the Halloween celebration while Sally who is behind the Tree is taken by Dr. Finkelstein who tells her that the deadly nightshade she gave to him had a side effect.
The Hanging Tree and his skeletons are later seen attending the Town Meeting about Jack showing everything unique in Christmas Town and after the song, the skeletons on the Hanging Tree applaud for Jack's performance along with the rest of the audience attending the Town Meeting. They make no further appearances after that, even after Jack Skellington rescues Santa Claus from Oogie Boogie.
Video game appearances[]

Despite his small amount of screen time in the film, the Hanging Tree appears in the cemetery where he asks Jack Skellington to help find his missing men who were scared off by Oogie Boogie in the graveyard playing a prominent role in the game. Once the player defeats the enemies and finds all five of them, the Tree opens a path to the crypt for Jack.
