Harambe also known as the Port of Harambe is the fictitious city which serves as the setting for the themed "land", Africa of Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Background[]
History[]
Harambe is a municipal port located in an unidentified county in East Africa, along the Uvumbuzi river which connects to the Indian Ocean. The colony was originally known as Harambe Village with the name Harambe being a Swahili term for communal labour. The main language used by natives in Harambe is that of Swahili though English was also very commonly spoken.
The village was colonized in the year 1420 by imperial Europeans. The primary structure used by these Europeans was Harambe Fort along the Uvumbuzi river. Throughout the 1500s, the village was a major trading-port used for amoral businesses such as ivory, precious metals, spices as human-trafficking in the European slave-trade.
Colonial British groups frequented the port in the 1800s, notably through the Tusker House establishment. Harambe would serve as a base for the company Kilimanjaro Safaris which arranged for safaris through the wilderness surrounding Harambe. In the late 19th/early 20th century, the port was visited by adventurer Trader Sam who accompanied Kilimanjaro Safaris for an elephant-back expedition.
Around the 1930s, the port of Harambe was visited by the colonial Adventure Trading Company which traded totems known as jujus. Prior to the year 1938, a book on Harambe was written by an author named Wilson with the title, "The Harambe Chronicles". At some point in the 19th or 20th century, the port would also host the international adventurers group known as the Wilderness Explorers.
In the year 1961, the people of Harambe revolted against their European colonial overlords. Via this revolution, Harambe gained its independence and celebrated the event by declaring it as "Uhuru 1961" or "Freedom 1961". By the 1990s, the wildlife surrounding Harambe was turned into the Harambe Wildlife Reserve which aimed to preserve Africa's fauna. The Wilderness Explorers and Kilimanjaro Safaris often worked with the reserve to assist in protecting Harambe's wildlife and culture.
