Harold Ripple is a character in Disney•Pixar's 2023 animated feature film Elemental. He is the uncle of Wade Ripple as well as the brother of Brook Ripple.
Background[]
Personality[]
Harold is fun-loving, friendly, and artistic like his sister, Brook who gives him all of the credit for his artworks. Harold is very welcoming to other elements, including fire, but he can be a little insensitive and ignorant where he made an offhand comment on Ember's native fire language, only to immediately regret it upon receiving glares from his sister and younger nephew.
Physical appearance[]
Harold's body is made of translucent turquoise water. He is shorter and pudgier than his sister, Brook. He has various waves on his head that resemble curly hair and waves on his face that resemble a large mustache.
He wears a golden tunic shirt with turquoise stripes that match his skin color. In addition, Harold's shirt also has dark gold seams around the sleeves and neckline of his shirt.
Role in the film[]
Harold first appears where Brook describes him as the real artist, as he replies that he dabbles his art with watercolors, which is Harold's style just as Brook describes him as a wonderful painter, recapping that one of his paintings was exhibited in the Element City Museum's permanent collection. He then replies to Wade that he speaks so well and clear about Ember's creativity. Harold is later seen having dinner with the rest of the Ripples to which they find Alan's story about Wade being afraid of sponges as a child interesting.
After Alan accidentally breaks the pitcher he is using, Ember uses her fiery ability to fix the broken pitcher, impressing Harold and the rest of the Ripples. During the Crying Game brought up by Wade, Harold remembered the emotional moment with Brook who never had a chance to bid a farewell to Nana just before Ember and Wade get their turn. Later when Wade tells Ember that the light inside her made him feel like that he wants her to be near him, Harold and the rest of the Ripples emotionally react to Ember and Wade's relationship.
During the climax of the film, Harold and the rest of the Ripples are seen bidding a farewell to Wade who is leaving. He then hands Wade a painting of himself awash in sadness (which shows an illustration of Wade himself wearing a pink shirt holding a flower while crying) just before Wade's relatives began crying together, only for Wade to notice Ember in danger, due to the water bursting through the glass wall Ember made, flowing through the canal. Harold does not appear again throughout the rest of the film.
Trivia[]
- Harold's painting seen during the Ripples' dinner includes the colors of emotions (red, yellow, green, blue, and purple) and adds orange, pink, indigo, and aqua. This is a reference to Pixar's next film Inside Out 2.
- He was also mistaken by fans as Wade's father.
- It is unknown if Harold is older or younger than Brook.
