"Helena's Theme" is a musical composition by American composer John Williams for the 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise. It is performed by German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and features a romantic and adventurous style reminiscent of Old Hollywood. The theme represents the character of Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is Indiana Jones' goddaughter and companion in the film.
Background and release[]
Williams, who composed the music for all five Indiana Jones films, wrote "Helena's Theme" specifically for Waller-Bridge's character, whom he described as "a combination of an adventuress and a femme fatale at the same time". He said he had "great fun" writing the theme, which he said was "very romantic and kind of the Old Hollywood style".
Williams collaborated with Mutter, with whom he had previously worked on a 2019 album of his film music titled Across the Stars. He praised Mutter for her "infectious rhythmic swagger" and her "velvety legato" that lent to the theme's richness and charm.
Williams first revealed "Helena's Theme" during his Maestro of the Movies concert at the Hollywood Bowl on September 2, 2022, where he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and Mutter performed the solo violin part. He also shared some details about the film and Waller-Bridge's character, saying that she had "a lot of interplay of dialogue" with Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones that was "witty and bright and snappy".
The theme was officially released as a single on June 24, 2023, six days before the film's premiere in U.S. theaters. It was also included in the film's soundtrack album, which was released by Walt Disney Records on June 28, 2023.[1]
