Herman Melville is a character in Doug's 1st Movie. He is the monster of Lucky Duck Lake and is voiced by Frank Welker in the movie.
Role in the film
In the beginning of the film Doug Funnie and his best friend Skeeter Valentine ride their bikes out to Luckey Duck Lake to look for the legendary monster to which they split up when they enter the woods and Doug runs into Roger Klotz and his gang who are planning on playing a prank by dressing up as a monster and trying to scare the boys to which Doug tries to stop them but they take off Doug's clothes and put them in a tree. Meanwhile Skeeter finds a stinkey part of Lucky Duck Lake and then hears something and grabs his camera and then Roger and his gang sneak up behind Skeeter and scare him causing him to take a picture of them to which he tells the guys that their prank was funny and asks if they made their costume or rented it but then something scarey from the lake sneaks up behind Skeeter and he turns around and sees The Lucky Duck Lake Monster to which Skeeter accidently drops his camera and it goes off and Roger and the gang run out of the woods afraid as the monster's shadow falls over Skeeter and the monster roars at Skeeter causing Skeeter to scream and shut his eyes as the opening credits roll.
The next day Doug and Skeeter go to the mall to get Skeeter's camera developed to which they find out that it took a picture of the monster's foot when it hit the ground to which Doug and Skeeter believe they will be famous when they find the monster and Doug soon imagines himself as the Super Hero Quailman who safes the town's Valentine's Day Dance from a hideous monster and Quailman manages to impress the girl of his dreams played by Doug's crush Patti Mayonnaise. When Skeeter and Doug go back to the woods to get their bikes they discover that the bikes are gone and later on when they're at Skeeter's house trying to figure out what happened to their bikes they discover that someone has brought them back to Skeeter's house and soon discover monster feet leading into the house which they realize that the monster is inside. Once inside Doug and Skeeter begin looking for the monster to which they accidently knock over a light and cause the neighborhood power to go out and find nothing upstairs and then go downstairs to Skeeter's bedroom and check Skeeter's closet to which they find nothing but then Skeeter's flashlight goes out and while Doug goes to get another one Skeeter tries to look under his bed but can't and asks Doug to check under the bed to which someone replies Me? And Skeeter nods yes but then realizes that it's not Doug but the monster himself and as Skeeter tries to run for his life up the stairs he falls backwards causing his garbage can to fall on him and his face protector to fall off to which the monster tries to put it back on but can't and then the monster takes the head and sits on Skeeter's bed and cuddles it and Skeeter comes out of his garbage can surprised and Doug returns and they realize the monster is friendly. The monster soon sniffs around Skeeter's bookshelf and takes a book and then begins to lick it to which Skeeter tells him that books aren't for eating but to be nice to the book, and that he almost ate Herman Melville to which the monster responds to the name thinking that it's his so Doug and Skeeter name him Herman Melville and then decide to take him over to Mayor Tippy Dink's house to show her to which she is surprised to see him as is her husband Bud Dink who faints when he sees Herman in his garage. Mayor Tippy decides that they should keep Herman a secret as to keep him out of trouble from Bill Bluff who is looking for him and that she'll call the press tomorrow and they decide to keep Herman at Doug's house next door to which they dress him up in a scooba divin suit to which they are almost caught by Doug's Mother who thinks it's her daughter Judy in a disguise for a play but Doug promises his Mom he'll be back down to clean up the mess. Once they get Herman inside Doug's bedroom Porkchop begins barking at him to which Doug puts him outside. Later Doug goes to Swirley's
