This article is about the character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For the character from Hercules, see Hermes.
- “I was warned to stay away from Luke and his mother. Warned that no matter how much I tried to help, I would just make things worse. And I went anyway... Do you know what that feels like? To be close to someone you love, knowing neither of you has any choice, but to keep hurting each other?”
- ―Hermes speaking with Percy and Annabeth[src]
Hermes is a supporting character in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the famous messenger of the gods who also doubles as a package delivery man.
Background[]
Personality[]
Hermes is the messenger of the gods, as well as the god of tricks and thievery. Because of this, he tends to be very laid back and snarky. He actually seems to admire the tenacity of demigods and was very much impressed with Percy Jackson for his rebelliousness and Annabeth Chase for her thievery skills. He also hides a more sentimental and darker side of himself that he does not like to show due to the pain it caused himself and those close to him. While he can be cynical like the other gods, he is much more aloof about what goes on around him and will sometimes let things slide.
Physical appearance[]
Hermes looks like an unassuming adult with dark hair who dresses in a khaki colored clothing. This stems from his job as a delivery service where his "work wear" consists of a jumpsuit of sorts combined with a hat that has his Hermes Express logo on it.
Powers and abilities[]
Being the messenger of the gods, Hermes possesses super speed, teleportation, and flight, the last one being the result of owning his famous winged shoes.
Role in the series[]
The Lightning Thief[]
Sometime ago, Hermes met May Castellan and had a demigod child named Luke. Due to circumstances, something terrible happened to May that resulted in a falling out with Hermes and Luke. While Hermes had attempted to repair their split, he instead made things worse, resulting in Luke becoming cold towards him and the gods in general.
Hermes continued about his life, acting as a messenger to the gods and running his own successful package delivery system. When Percy Jackson beheaded Medusa, he packaged the head and sent it through the mail to the gods on Mount Olympus. Hermes was amused by his act of rebellion, but it was heavily implied that the other gods did not feel the same way, as Athena later refused to help Annabeth Chase, Percy, and Grover Underwood when they were hiding from Echidna and the Chimera.
Hermes eventually decided to relax at the Lotus Casino after Zeus sent all of his children out to search for the Master Bolt. Ares knew he went there and sent Percy and his friends to go see him for help in reaching Santa Monica. Hermes knew they would arrive and spoke to Percy and Annabeth about how things have been on Mount Olympus, adding that he had no interest in helping them because of how things went down between his lover and son, something that Poseidon had actually warned him about. Despite this, Annabeth managed to snag his keys to his car and Hermes reluctantly let them leave with it, knowing that nothing was going to stop them.
Trivia[]
- Hermes did not appear in the first book, The Lightning Thief, but was mentioned several times.
- Prior to Lin-Manuel Miranda playing him, Dylan Neal and Nathan Fillion played him in the first and second live-action movies, respectively. Ironically, while Hermes does not appear in the Broadway musical, Miranda is actually known for performing on Broadway with his hit shows In the Heights and Hamilton.
