"Hockey Moms" is the fourth episode of the Disney Original, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and the fourth episode of the series overall. It was released on Disney+ on April 16, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Sofi has decided to join the Don't Bothers, only she can't bring herself to tell her parents she's quitting the Ducks. Evan and Nick invite Koob to a sleepover to get their socially awkward goalie to come out of his shell. Alex finds herself and her fellow Don't Bother moms pitted against the Duck moms in their annual Hockey Skills Challenge. It turns into a battle over which team will get Sofi. Will a little coaching magic from Bombay be enough to put Alex over the top to win?

Plot[]

Following on from her acceptance onto the Don't Bothers, Sofi struggles to ask her parents to sign her permission slip, formally allowing her to play in the official games for the team. To rectify this, Sofi attends both the training for the Mighty Ducks, and the Don't Bothers back-to-back. Her performance suffers as a result, however, and Evan wonders whether Sofi is as good as he thought. After Alex asks for her permission slip, Sofi is forced to reveal that she hasn't told her parents about the team and has been attending both practices.

Things are made more difficult for Sofi when she arrives home that night to find out her brother has been accepted into Harvard, an event which their parents have been planning for at least five years. Sofi is reminded why she plays for the Ducks and how this will lead her to Harvard too, but this only grows the divide between Sofi and her parents and makes it more difficult for her to ask for her permission slip to be signed.

After locking up the Ice Palace later that night, Gordon and Alex bump into Stephanie and her husband. They talk for a brief while, and Stephanie invites the two to dinner, citing that their friends cancelled on them. At the dinner, the four talk about Hockey and various other things, and Gordon suggests Alex and the other moms of the Don't Bothers join in on the Hockey Challenge with the Ducks moms. Alex has her reserves about the idea, but is eventually convinced by Gordon that it will help her ease things with Stephanie.

The following day, Sofi hands in her permission slip, supposedly signed by her parents. Nick gathers up the courage to ask Evan to sleep over at his house, finally trying to gain the best friend status. Evan agrees, much to Nick's surprise, but things become more complicated when Koob tells the two that he is feeling down and like he is failing the team. As a result, Evan asks if Koob can attend the sleepover with him, and Nick is forced to accept despite wanting it to be just the two of them.

At the parents training, Coach Bombay takes the lead, taking the parents out onto the ice for the practice. Things run smoothly, but it becomes clear that the majority of the parents have no talent in hockey. Alex is named the star of the training match. Later, Alex tries to beat Stephanie's top speed score with Gordon after the training but finds herself unable to do so, nearing 25mph as opposed to Stephanie's 38mph.

Evan, Nick, and Koob attend the sleepover at Nick's house but find things difficult when their phones are taken away to incentivize them to wind-down ready for bedtime. Koob explains that he needs his phone and cannot get to sleep without it, so the team hatch a plan to retrieve the phone from Nick's moms. To do this, Koob sings for the two whilst Evan and Nick retrieve the phone. They are successful, but Koob's phone runs out of charge moments later. Koob opts to stay at the sleepover, however, citing that he has had more phone trying to retrieve the phone than he would on the actual phone.

The next day, Sofi is late to the Ducks practice due to her previous training with the Don't Bothers. When she arrives, however, everyone is shocked to see she is wearing a Don't Bothers jersey underneath her coat. With this, she runs away from the training to the Ice Palace, but finds that her parents have already arrived. When she explains that she wishes to be a Don't Bother, her parents tell her that the Don't Bothers are losers, therefore she must remain a Duck. She is reluctant, and strikes a deal with her parents: if the Don't Bothers moms win the Hockey Skills challenges, she can become a Don't Bother.

Things are tense at the competition the following day, and the Don't Bothers are able to win a few challenges. It came down between Alex and Stephanie in the slapshot challenge. Eventually, on her last shot, Alex beats Stephanie's score of 40mph, scoring 41mph. She is ecstatic, but the Mighty Ducks are crowned champions when Coach T finds out that Alex's foot was over the line when she hit the shot. Sofi is distraught, citing that she will always be a Duck now, but her father sees the sadness in her eyes.

After the game, her father brings her a signed permission slip, citing that he saw how happy she was when she thought the Don't Bothers won. Sofi is overjoyed and texts Evan to let him know that she is officially joining the team. Coach Bombay arrives at the Morrow house moments later to congratulate Alex.
