Hold Your Breath is an American psychological horror-thriller film. Directed by Karrie Crouse and Will Joines and starring Sarah Paulson, it follows a mother who believes an evil presence resides in the local dust storms. It was released on Hulu on October 3, 2024.

Synopsis[]

In dust bowl Oklahoma of the 1930s, a mother nears the breaking point as she tries to protect her daughters from deadly windstorms and the impact of her own harrowing past. When the older girl tells the legend of the Grey Man to the younger one, the story slips under the skin of the whole family. The Grey Man is a spirit carried like dust in the wind, breathed in, and never to be shaken.[1]

Cast[]

  • Sarah Paulson as Margaret Bellum
  • Amiah Miller as Rose Bellum
  • Alona Jane Robbins as Ollie Bellum
  • Annaleigh Ashford as Esther Smith
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Wallace Grady
  • Bill Heck as Henry Bellum

Production[]

On June 22, 2020, it was first announced that a film titled Dust was in development, with Karrie Crouse and Will Joines set to direct. It was also announced that Claire Foy was cast as the lead.[2]

Two years later, on July 25, 2022, it was announced that the lead role had been recasted, with Sarah Paulson replacing Foy.[3]

Less than a month later, on August 4, Annaleigh Ashford was cast in the film.[4] The move was followed by the casting of Ebon Moss-Bachrach on August 17, and followed by Amiah Miller and Bill Heck on September 1.[5][6]

The film was retitled to Hold Your Breath sometime in early 2024.[7]

Release[]

On August 8, 2024, Deadline reported that the film was slated for an October 3 release on Hulu. Photo stills from the film were also released.[8]

Twenty days later, on August 28, 2024, the poster for the film was released.[9] The trailer followed on September 9.[10]

Reception[]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 44% of 48 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.4/10. The website's consensus reads: "Sarah Paulson is as arresting as ever, but a dearth of incident and scares ultimately robs Hold Your Breath of long-awaited release."[11] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 47 out of 100, based on 10 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[12]
