This article is about the current incarnation of the Wasp. For the first incarnation, see Janet Van Dyne.

About damn time.
―Hope[src]

Hope Van Dyne, known as the Wasp, is a character and superheroine from Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appears in the 2015 film Ant-Man as the tritagonist, and later returns in the 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp as the eponymous deuteragonist.

She is the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, working for Darren Cross. However, upon learning that Cross intends to sell the Yellowjacket battlesuit as a weapon, she and her father work together, recruiting reluctant thief Scott Lang to become Ant-Man in order to steal the suit. Hank would later reveal that he had made a new suit for her, allowing her to succeed her mother as the second Wasp.

Hope Van Dyne was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz.

That's how you punch.
―Hope training Scott Lang

When Hope was a child she saw her father as a hero until the day that her mother, Janet "died". Her father, Hank told Hope that Janet died in a plane crash. However, she did not believe in her father and blamed him for her mother's death. Shortly after Janet's demise, Hank decided to send her to a Boarding school so he could find a way to bring Janet from the Quantum Realm. Years later, Hope was the decisive vote that allowed Darren Cross to be elected CEO of Pym Technologies and Pym was fired from his own company vote. However, Hope approached again to her father because Cross was very close to recreating Pym's formula. She wanted to use the Ant-Man suit but her father knew a guy who would be able to use it and that would help them in their cause.

HopePym

When Scott Lang returned the Ant-Man suit after stealing it, Hope called the police to arrest him. However, Hank helped Lang to escape from prison. Hope later was in charge of training Lang, as she was an expert in martial arts. With the training finished, she with her father accompanied Scott to infiltrate to an old Howard Stark's warehouse. Arriving there, Lang found that the old warehouse was now a facility belonging to the Avengers. She worried about Lang but seeing the battle and seeing that he used what he learned from her, she was glad. As she, her father, and Lang were discussing the final mission, Cross arrived at the Pym's residence and asked to speak to Hank. Eventually, Cross left the mansion which caused Hope to worry about that Cross suspicious of her. Her suspicions were founded as Cross immediately called to tell her about his meeting with Pym. She told Scott and her father that Cross would increase security on the day of the presentation of Yellowjacket suit. Lang then asked Hank and Hope to recruit his friends as they could be useful in their mission.

When Luis, Kurt, and Dave were recruited for the mission, Hope did not see fit to use them in the mission as she thought they were inexperienced. She later gave Sanax to Scott's friends after they saw the Ant-Man suit in action. The next night, Hope went to Pym Technologies to witness the presentation of Darren Cross and the Yellowjacket suit. Hope tried to reason with Cross after this one revealed his intentions to sell his suit to HYDRA and also kill Hank Pym. Despite her efforts, Cross seriously injured Hank, and also Mitchell Carson managed to escape with Cross formula. The next day, Hope, Scott, and Hank discussed the successful mission and also the stay and subsequent escape of Lang from Quantum Realm. After the meeting, Lang and Hope kiss each other which caused that Pym was in a state of shock. Hank revealed to Hope that he and her mother were working on a new suit but that after her death the project was frozen. Hank and Hope then said it was time to finish that project.

Hope returns as a major character in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Three years since her last appearance, it is revealed Hope broke up with Scott following the clash of the Avengers and spoken to him at all, until Scott contacts Hope and Hank about dreaming about her mother Janet Van Dyne. Hope knocks Scott out and he wakes up to find her driving him despite him meaning to be a home under house arrest. Hope tells Scott that she detached his ankle bracelet and attached it to an ant so that the police are still convinced he is at home. Hope discusses Scott's dream about her mother and take him to Hank's new facility. Hope learns that Scott saw a child version of Hope playing in a closet with her mother and becomes emotional upon learning Janet has been trying to contact her and Hank through Scott after his previous adventures in the quantum realm in 2015. This makes Hope and Hank realize that Janet is indeed alive after believing she died all those years ago.

Not long after, Scott is possessed by Janet's signal and learns where in the quantum realm her mother is. Hope speaks to Janet through Scott until the signal is gone, but they now know where her mother is. When Hank decides to go to the realm alone to rescue Janet, Hope is scared about him going in alone as she is worried she may lose her father like she lost her mother. However, Hank is successful in finding Janet and brings her back to earth, where Hope has an emotional reunion with her mother. Hope, Janet, and Hank help Scott when he must retrieve Hank's lab which has been shrunken and stolen by Ghost. When Scott goes huge in the sea, Hope rescues him and passionately kisses him, thrilled he is okay and they resume their relationship. After Ghost is saved by Janet, Hope, Scott, Janet, and Hank build a new quantum tunnel so that Scott can go down to a specific area of the quantum realm. However, just as Hope is about to bring Scott back to earth, she, Hank and Janet become victims of Thanos' snap and is turned to dust, while Scott is trapped in the quantum realm.

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers Endgame - Women

Five years later, in 2023, Scott was able to exit the Quantum Realm after a rat activated the gateway to the Quantum Realm. Although five years had passed, since Thanos' victory, Scott said he was trapped in the Quantum Realm for five hours. With this knowledge, the Avengers came with a plan to use the Quantum Realm to travel back in time, collect the Infinity Stones, and undo the Decimation. After the Avengers managed to travel back in time and collect the Stones, Hope was resurrected when the Hulk managed to snap his fingers. Hope was then summoned by Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts to fight against Thanos and his forces. During the battle, Hope reunited with Scott and helped him activate the Quantum Realm device so they can send the Infinity Stones back to the past. Once they turned on the device, Hope joined other female superheroes to help Captain Marvel get to Luis' van where it housed the gateway to Quantum Realm so she can return the Stones to the past. Hope, Rescue, and Shuri fought Thanos, but he was able to destroy the van before Captain Marvel can enter the Quantum Realm.

After the defeat of Thanos and his armies, along with Tony Stark's death, Hope and Scott watched fireworks outside with an older Cassie Lang, happy that they were reunited as they embraced each other. Later, Hope, along with her parents and Scott attended Tony's funeral, looking depressed as he sacrificed himself to save the universe.

What If...? - 1x05 - What If..

Hope in "What If...?"

Hope is mentioned in the third episode "What If... The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?", where she was killed during a battle and her death caused so much grief for her father Hank - as he had also lost Janet - that it made him become a serial killer and kill all of the Avengers within one week of Nick Fury setting up the Avengers incentive.

Another variant of Hope appears in "What If... Zombies!?", waiting for her parents' return, but her reunion with her mother is not what it seems that she has been contracted with the Quantum Virus. Hope helps the survivors try to find the cure for the zombie virus, until she is affected herself. Hope is slowly dying on their way to return from Camp Lehigh after being attacked by a recently zombified Sharon Carter. Hope willingly sacrifices herself to the zombies, who turn her into one of their own after encouraging Peter Parker to smile for her. Now also a zombie, Van Dyne, whom is giant, tries to restrain the quadjet, until Peter, Scott Lang, and T'Challa are able to escape.

Season 2
What if..

Child Hope in season 2.

Another Hope appears in "What if... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?", as a child who befriends Peter Quill who has been ordered by his father to invade earth and attack the Avengers. The role of the Wasp is also presented in the form of her mother. Hope tries to convince her father and his teammates that Peter is a good kid and they bond over their love for music. Hope succeeds in convincing the team and she receives Goose the Flurkeen as a gift from Mar-Vell.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Hope returns in this film as Scott's girlfriend and partner in crime. In 2026, Hope is first seen when she and Scott rescue his daughter from jail and try their best to keep Cassie safe, whom Hope has a mother-daughter relationship with. It is revealed that Hope has overtaken her dad's company and has been awarded for her attempts to rebuild the world following the blip. During a family meal, Scott is informed that Hope and her dad Hank have been helping Cassie learn about the quantum realm and built a device that will send a signal down to the quantum realm. After Cassie turns it on, Janet demands she turns it off as neither one of them knows what is down there, to which Hope mentions that is why they built the signal, so they can understand. The family are all suddenly sucked into the realm and Hope is separated from Scott and Cassie, but with her parents.

Wasp - Ant-Man Quantumania

While trying to locate Scott and Cassie, Hope and Hank are determined to learn about Janet's past down in the realm. They learn she had a sexual relationship with a resident named Krylar while learning her father had the same with a woman named Linda, much to Hope's disgust. While the Pym family speak with Krylar they learn more of Janet's past and what she did with a man known as the conqueror. Krylar betrays the Pym-Dyne family and Hope holds off the creatures until she is able to escape with her parents.

Having landed somewhere unknown in the realm, Hope becomes anxious and desperate to find Scott and Cassie, while demanding to know what Krylar meant about her mother. Janet finally unfolds her past to her daughter and husband, learning of Kang the Conqueror and what he had done to the civilisation while in the realm. Upon hearing what her mother did to try and stop Kang, Hope tells Janet she is no longer alone and the family will stop Kang.

Hope soon manages to get a read on Scott through her suit and manages to locate him in the Multiversal Engine Core, rescuing her boyfriend from millions of versions of himself before he falls. Hope and Scott manage to shrink the core and are reunited with Cassie, Hank and Janet. Janet tries to convince Scott not to give Kang the core before they are confronted by the conqueror and learn he is trying to escape the realm. Together, Scott and Hope try to keep Kang in the realm, after learning earlier that he must not leave.

While trying to prevent Kang from leaving, Hope, Cassie, and Scott are reunited with Darren Cross, whom they thought died 11 years ago, but survived and became deformed and transformed into M.O.D.O.K. by Kang. While facing off Cross, Janet is able to reopen the tunnel that will take the family back home. Hope is able to return to earth with Cassie, Hank, and Janet, but realizes that Scott is still down in the realm, fighting Kang. Hope jumps back in and manages to save her boyfriend from Kang by attacking him as Scott is on the verge of death. Together, Hope and Scott defeat Kang as he explodes in the destruction and share a moment. Scott hugs Hope, overjoyed that she came back for him and they admit their love for each other before being brought back to earth by Cassie.

Sometime later following Kang's defeat, the Lang-Pym family are at a restaurant where they are celebrating all of Cassie's birthdays they missed wile they were all dusted and trapped in the quantum realm for five years.

Trivia

  • Ironically, in the comics, Hope Pym hailed from the MC2 universe, an alternate future of the Marvel Universe depicting the children of the heroes succeeding them. However, due to the deaths of her parents, Hope became the supervillainess Red Queen.
    • In the mainstream Marvel Universe, a new character named Nadia Pym has been recently introduced as the daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife, Maria Troyvia, who had been killed by foreign agents.
    • Hope becomes Wasp rather than the Red Queen because the rights to the Red Queen title were held by 20th Century Fox, as the title is more commonly associated with recurring X-Men character Madelyne Pryor. With the purchase of Fox by Disney, this is no longer an issue, but Hope will remain Wasp, most likely so Madelyne can be introduced as the Red Queen in the MCU.
