Hua Li is a supporting character in Disney's 2020 live-action remake of Mulan. She is the wife of Hua Zhou and the mother of Hua Mulan.
She is based on Fa Li from the 1998 animated film.
Background[]
Hua Li is the wife of Hua Zhou and the mother of Mulan. Like her husband, she seems to be very traditional. She cares deeply about Mulan and her safety, as shown by her reaction when learning that Mulan has run away to join the army.
Role in the film[]
Hua Li is first seen discussing with her husband Hua Zhou that she was trying to protect Mulan which he replies that his daughter is still learning to control herself. During discussion with her husband, Li tells him that the Matchmaker will find a good husband for Mulan to marry, fearing that the people would call Mulan a witch, telling Zhou to have a talk with his daughter.
Years later when Mulan grows up, Hua Li tells her that the Matchmaker has found an auspicious match while her husband Hua Zhou tells her to sit down for a conversation. During a conversation after Hua Zhou tells Mulan that he is the one to bring honor to his family, Hua Li tells Mulan that her husband will not return, much to Mulan fearing about her father's fate. The next day after Mulan took Hua Zhou's armor and sword, Hua Li approaches her husband who tells her that he must protect Mulan from danger by sending in the Phoenix.
After Mulan returns home after defeating the Rourans, Hua Xiu tells her mother Hua Li that Mulan has returned which Li happily reunites with Mulan, followed by Hua Zhou happily reuniting with his daughter, followed by Mulan making amends with her father and Mulan being honored for her heroic deeds.
