Hylurgians are a race of aliens featured in the 2025 Disney•Pixar animated feature film Elio. They hail from the planet Hylurg under rule by Lord Grigon.
Background[]
Physical appearance[]
Default-wise, Hylurgians are aliens who take the form of slender arthropod-like creatures - specifically resembling caterpillars or tardigrades -with no eyes, four arms, and multiple sharp teeth inside their mouth. The armor they wear is known as a "carapace", which only Hylurgians in battle armor wear them. When equipped, the Hylurgian who wears it will be given digital eyes located on the top of their visor with black pupils. The carapace armor that Hylurgians wear takes the form of an armored torso built of steel-like material designed after a crustacean (more specifically, a decapod) with armored gauntlets and glowing accents.
Role in the film[]
Upon being abducted by Lord Grigon in his ship, a group of Hylurgians are seen awaiting the presence of Elio just before approaching Grigon himself. He asks them to take him to Grigon, which the Hylurgians open a passageway to the warlord's throne. During a private conversation with Grigon, he attempts to explain that Hylurgians prefer to communicate with holographic screens just not before demonstrating his habit of shooting flower-like aliens as targets, much to his actions in targeting the victims. However, the conversation becomes interrupted when a Hylurgian guard informs Grigon that his prince wants to see him. Instead of answering, Grigon orders the Hylurgian guards to throw Elio into prison while looking for his son to prepare to serve the Hylurgian army.
After Elio escapes from prison, he encounters Glordon who shows him the battle armor called a "carapace" which he would later wear, explaining that every Hylurgian receives one when ready. However, the conversation is interrupted when Grigon sends the Hylurgians on a search for Glordon. Later, Grigon tells a Hylurgian servant to prepare the carapace battle armor for Glordon to join the army as a plan to prepare for his ceremony.
Just then, Elio brings the Glordon clone to Grigon discussing with the ambassadors of the Communiverse. The other Hylurgian soldiers then perform a ceremony for Glordon to become one of them as while wearing carapace battle armor as they hold a fanfare for him as part of Elio's plan to trick Grigon. While performing the ceremony, they march and beat their chests while others blow on horns designed with sharp teeth and perform a Hylurgian chant to celebrate Glordon serving the army. As Glordon joins the army, he becomes destroyed as he is revealed to be a clone, dissolving into slime.
Deceived by the clone of Glordon, Grigon incites a plan to conquer the Communiverse. After hearing of Elio accused of being a traitor to the aliens, Grigon hears this and tells the aliens of the Communiverse that Elio betrayed them, leading him to be banished for safety. As a result, he makes it worse by ordering the Hylurgians to hold the residents of the Communiverse as hostages, making them unable to escape, including the liquid supercomputer Ooooo, as part of his tyrannical plans,
When Elio and Olga return to the Communiverse in a plan to save Glordon's life, the Hylurgians are aware of seeing him dying from the cold in Earth. Grigon remorsefully removes his carapace battle armor to heal for his son and reconcile with him as all the other Hylurgians notice his tantrum and breakdown. This results in the Hylurgians to free all the hostages, eventually making the other ambassadors honor Elio for being a human hero who saved an alien's life as well as bringing peace. The Hylurgians and other aliens bid a farewell to Elio and his aunt Olga as they return to Earth.
Trivia[]
- Other than Grigon and his son Glordon, a few other Hylurgians are seen speaking. One is a Hylurgian guard informing Grigon that his son Glordon wants to speak to him and another is a Hylurgian servant whom Grigon demands to build battle armor for his son.
- Given that there are many adult Hylurgians physically seen in Elio, Glordon appears to be the only known Hylurgian child in the Elio universe.
