- “Ugh. Autopilots.”

I.V.A.N. (an acronym for Internal Voice Activated Navigator) is a portable voice-activated virtual assistant onboard computer aboard all the spaceships in the 2022 Disney•Pixar animated film Lightyear.
In the film, Buzz is not a big fan of I.V.A.N. He likes to be in control and does not trust autopilots. Buzz also finds I.V.A.N. annoying, always alerting him whenever things go wrong, pointing out each and every mission failure. In his opinion, autopilots over complicate things instead of helping.
Role in the film[]
As Buzz boards on the Turnip while escaping from a hostile vine and a monstrous insect, he plans to return on the helm so that he can leave from the planet where I.V.A.N. offers Buzz for help, which he feels uncomfortable of having autopilots on his ship just before asking Alisha about the status just as Buzz reports of the fuel engaged. As Buzz launches his ship to leave the planet, I.V.A.N. warns him of the launch trajectory being unsound, much to Buzz ignoring the autopilot's warning as well as Featheringhamstan's offer to help him, causing the Turnip to hit the edge of a cliff, causing Buzz's ship to be stuck on the planet.
One year later, Airman Díaz gets Buzz's I.V.A.N. ready for his mission, telling him that his autopilot is fully loaded. Just as Buzz begins his mission, I.V.A.N. introduces itself to Buzz, telling him that his mission is to accelerate through deep space going around Alpha T’Kani and then through the deceleration rings back to T'Kani Prime in 4 minutes and 28 seconds. Just as Buzz does his assignment, he pushes to hyper speed, causing the fuel cell to become unstable, as I.V.A.N. alerts Buzz that the failure to course correct will result in missing the rings, causing Buzz's ship to fly off into deep space, resulting in certain death as ejection is Buzz's only option to fix within 26 seconds. Just as Buzz commands I.V.A.N. to push the engines all the way with maximum power, the autopilot then denies, warning Buzz that he must focus on the fuel cell while the detonation countdown continues after Buzz commands I.V.A.N. to open the fuel door. Although Buzz corrects his course, I.V.A.N. tells him that he failed to reach hyper speed just before landing at T'Kani Prime.
Later when Buzz boards on the XL-15, he finds out that the spaceship has its own I.V.A.N. and upon hearing Buzz planning to blast off while Burnside plans to summon the ZAP Patrol, Buzz presses the silo door button next to I.V.A.N., which the autopilot denies, telling him that he is not authorized to use this ship only for Sox to plug in the cord below the "Launch" button while Buzz presses it so that the XL-15 can launch into space. As Buzz plans for hyper speed, he succeeds his mission while I.V.A.N. congratulates Buzz for his success just before landing back at T'Kani Prime, only to find out that Buzz skipped an extra 22 years due to the effects to the time dilation. Buzz encounters another I.V.A.N. on the Armadillo, only for Buzz to turn off the autopilot inside the ship just before Buzz and his crew escape from a group of insectoid creatures.
After Buzz is captured into Zurg's ship, he finds out that Zurg has his own I.V.A.N., which Buzz asks the autopilot to initiate self destruct in two minutes, which I.V.A.N. accepts Buzz's command, just before Zurg confronts him. Just as the ship is about to self-destruct, Zurg switches the self-destruct sequence to manual override, causing I.V.A.N. to pause just before Izzy arrives and defends Buzz from Zurg; Buzz fires onto the ship's main control, causing I.V.A.N. to continue the countdown to the self-destruct sequence just before Zurg's ship explodes.
Later, after placing the fuel onto the XL-15 and while boarding it, Zurg attacks Buzz on his ship as Buzz's I.V.A.N. alerts him that there is a damage on one of the ship's engines, which Buzz manages to repel Zurg and bring the Armadillo back to T'Kani Prime. Just as Buzz and his team are about to land on the planet, Buzz tells I.V.A.N. that his team is going too fast, which the autopilot "congratulates" them, which Mo tells his fellow allies to use the air breaks; Buzz manages to bring the Armadillo back to T'Kani Prime for safety.
