- This episode is similar to The Wizard of Oz by having Penny and Puff being sent back in time by a twister, similar to Dorothy and Toto.
- The "I Have a Dream" speech was used by permission of the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- At one point, Oscar mistakenly takes Zoey, thinking she's Penny, and asks her, "Canchu see that that girl is a wh—", a reference to a similar joke done by Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles ("Have you gone berserk? Can't you see that that man is a ni—?").
- The 1955 era of Penny's home state of California has Blacks and Mexicans being discriminated, even though California never discriminated against the Blacks and Mexicans.
