"I Play Dodgeball with Cannibals" is the ninth episode of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was released on December 10, 2025, and is the first episode of season two.

Synopsis[]

Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson race to defend Camp Half-Blood from dangerous forces.

Plot[]

Grover, on his journey to find Pan, locates the remains of another satyr on an island before acquiring his pan flute. He encounters a group of demigods lead by former camper Alison Simms. Grover is confused by their presence and puts together that they are rogue demigods working under Luke. They chase him towards the beach where a giant tentacled monster captures Grover and drags him away.

Percy, having apparently dreamed the events, wakes up to prepare for his last day of school. Now living with him and his mother Sally, is a young cyclops named Tyson. Tyson had been living on the streets until Sally ran into him while working at a homeless shelter and had him enrolled in school with Percy, being the only true friend he has. On their way to school, the two run into Annabeth who emerges from a taxicab. While reluctant to see Tyson with Percy, she urges both of them to come with her.

The taxi is driven by the Gray Sisters who reveal to have knowledge about Grover's whereabouts. When Percy threatens to drop their one and only eyeball out the window, they give Percy prophetic numbers, "30, 31, 75, 12". They dropped off near Camp Half-Blood where Percy and Annabeth attempt to catch up with each other, having not communicated throughout the summer. Their bliss is destroyed by the arrival of Laestrygonians who chase the three into the woods.

Due to the camp not allowing monsters in, Annabeth uses her magic to allow Tyson to enter, but accidentally brings a Laestrygonian (identified as Joe Bob) in with them. Joe Bob is quickly killed by Clarisse and her crew who scare the others away. Percy and Annabeth are confused by the inept monsters and realize that they may have been a distraction. They rush to Thalia's tree and find Luke poisoning it with his blade. As he escapes, Percy, Annabeth and Tyson are horrified by what happened.

The campers arrive along with Tantalus, the new camp counselor, who are set on killing Tyson for being a cyclops, only for Poseidon to claim him, revealing that Tyson is actually Percy's half-brother. Mr. D reveals that due to Chiron being a direct son of Kronos, he was removed from the camp with Tantalus taking his place. He proves to be a less cordial person as he refuses to listen to Percy and Annabeth's concerns and has them sent away. Percy is further angered at Tyson for not revealing his heritage, though he admits he wasn't sure. he only knew he was the son of a nereid and a god through a sphinx.

While Annabeth settles with Thalia's tree, Percy finds himself dreaming about Grover who can communicate with him via an "empathy link". Grover reveals that he is near the Golden Fleece, an object that could heal Thalia's tree. He also knows that Luke is after it, though he is unsure why. As the dream ends, Grover tells Percy the numbers "30, 31, 75, 12". Percy awakens to realize that the numbers are coordinates to the Sea of Monsters. Percy goes to Annabeth to tell her that he has a plan.

Book comparisons[]

  • Grover's interaction with former Camp Half-Blood campers is never depicted in the book. As a matter of fact, the character of Alison Simms was invented for the series.
  • Percy and Sally didn't know that Tyson was a cyclops due to the Mist. It is only because of Annabeth that Percy finally sees him as one. This was removed for the series for obvious reasons.
  • Matt Sloan, a bully at Meriwether Prep, doesn't appear. However, Brady Tate, is credited as Meriwether Jerk, who may or may not be this character.
  • In the book, Percy and Tyson are at school when they are attacked by Skull Eater, Marrow Sucker, and Joe Bob who are disguised as students due to the Mist. Annabeth arrives and rescues the two of them while they are in the middle of dodgeball. The series has Annabeth arrive before the boys even make it to school and encounter the three Laestrygonians after meeting the Gray Sisters.
  • In the book, Annabeth hails a taxi from the Gray Sisters after reuniting with Percy. In the series, she is already riding with them when she meets him again.
  • The Gray Sisters were reluctant to allow Tyson to ride with them in the book. In the series, this was removed.
  • The advertisement of Ganymede within the taxi cab is removed for the series.
  • In the book, when Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson arrive at camp, it is under attack by two iron bulls. It is after they are defeated, that Clarisse tells them that Thalia's tree had been poisoned. The series moves the Laestrygonians over in place of the bulls while Thalia's tree being poisoned is actually witnessed by the heroes.
  • Chiron being removed from camp is different between versions. In the book, he was removed for his failure to prevent Thalia's tree from being poisoned, while the series changes it to him being removed by Zeus, due to him being a direct son of Kronos.
  • Chiron was still at the camp before he had to leave in the book. In the series, he is already gone.

Trivia[]

  • The title comes from the second chapter of The Sea of Monsters, while the episode adapts that chapter, as well as chapters one, three, four, and parts of five and six.
  • This episode introduces Alison "Ali" Simms, who was invented specifically for the series and did not originate from the books.
