"I Plunge to My Death" is the fourth episode of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was released on January 2, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Our heroes search for a refuge in St Louis, and come face to face with the mother of all monsters.
Plot[]
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover get a ride on the Amtrack where the former two discuss their relationship with their respective parents. Annabeth reveals that her human father remarried and that his new wife did not take to her, resulting in Annabeth running away and meeting Luke and Thalia. While Luke embraced her, she had to earn Thalia's trust, which Percy deduces is what Annabeth is doing with him. Percy finds it ridiculous that their godly parents would do something like that with them, but Annabeth states that she respects her mother Athena more than her father and step-mother because Athena gives her rules to follow.
In the morning, the trio talk further about their plan to get to Los Angeles which they have two days to do. Transit officers arrive and inform the three that their cabin has been destroyed. They are kept under surveillance after getting information from another passenger who alerted them to the noise. The woman, who has a carrier with a rambunctious dog inside, proceeds to speak to the kids privately and voices her sinister intentions. The kids realize that she is Echidna, the mother of all monsters and reveals her plan to stop them.
The "dog" produces a stinger that hits Percy, but Annabeth attacks the tail and the kids flee with the officers in pursuit. The creature proceeds to damage the train and they make an emergency stop in St. Louis, Missouri. Annabeth leads the group to the Gateway Arch, which is considered a sacred place for Athena. While regrouping there, Percy suddenly becomes ill from the sting and Annabeth and Grover try to splash water on him from a fountain to cure him, but they realize that he needs to be healed from naturally running water. Annabeth makes plans to get Athena for help.
Echidna catches up with the children with the creature revealed to be the Chimera. As they run back to the Gateway Arch, Echidna speaks to Annabeth who reveals that due to their actions with Medusa, Athena was shamed and therefore will not protect them, opening the Arch to Echidna. The trio race to the top of the Arch and pull the fire alarm to get everybody out. Annabeth plans to stay to battle Echidna, but Percy tricks her and Grover out of the top and battles the Chimera and Echidna.
Percy is too weak to fight them any further and Echidna rips a hole in the floor and leaves Percy dangling. Percy falls to his doom, but a water spout from the nearby bay suddenly forms and sucks Percy in. He ends up at the bottom of the bay and struggles to swim back up. However, a Nereid arrives and calms Percy by telling him that Poseidon has sent her to inform him that he will be watching over and protecting him on his journey. Percy suddenly takes a deep breath and realizes that he can breathe under water.

Trivia[]
- The title comes from the thirteenth chapter of the The Lightning Thief, while the episode adapts that chapter and parts of chapter twelve and the first couple of pages of chapter fourteen.
- This was the last episode critical press agents were allowed to watch before the series' official premiere.
Book comparisons[]
- Most of the camping transition between Auntie Em's and the Amtrack ride is skipped over with some elements, such as Grover explaining Searchers and Pan, moved to the train ride. Because of this, Gladiola the Poodle is removed from the series.
- Percy reading a newspaper about his disappearance is removed from the series.
- Echidna first appears on the train while her pet chihuahua, later revealed to be the Chimera, is kept in a dog carrier. In the book, the trio do not encounter her until they get to the Gateway Arch, at which point they are on an elevator car with her and the Chimera is out in the open.
- In the book, Echidna called Chimera "Sonny", because he was her son. In the series, Echidna calls her "Precious" and she is accurately female.
- Percy forces Annabeth and Grover to leave so that he can deal with the Chimera. In the book, they're separated because there wasn't enough room on the car. Not only does the Chimera transform, but so does Echidna. Not only that, but Percy was with a boy, his parents, and a park ranger who are also implied to be able to see Echidna and the Chimera in their true forms.
- The Chimera stings Percy on the train. In the book, Percy gets stung on the Gateway Arch.
- In the book, the Gateway Arch is depicted as directly above the Mississippi River, resulting in Percy falling from the arch into the river. This is not the case in real life, so in the series, Poseidon summons a water spout to drag Percy into the river.
