Iduna's Scarf is a key item in Disney's 2019 animated feature film Frozen II. A scarf that is part of the Northuldran culture, it originally belonged to a Northuldran girl named Iduna. Years after her death, the scarf remained in the possession of Iduna's daughters Anna and Elsa.
Thirty-four years into the past, Iduna wore the scarf the day she rescued Prince Agnarr during the battle that took place between the Arendellians and the Northuldrans in the Enchanted Forest. After escaping the Forest with Agnarr, Iduna took up residence in Arendelle, with her scarf being the only material possession she brought with her. She treasured the scarf long into adulthood, during which she married Agnarr and gave birth to their daughters, Elsa and Anna.
Six years after Agnarr and Iduna die at sea, an adult Elsa and Anna discover the scarf's Northuldran history, and it subsequently becomes a vital clue to them discovering the identity of their father's savior and the existence of a fifth spirit (later revealed to be Elsa).
Role in the film
Iduna's scarf is first seen in the prologue when she and Agnarr come into Anna and Elsa's room. Agnarr decides to tell the girls the story of the Enchanted Forest, and Iduna, who is shown wearing the scarf around her shoulders, asks, "Are you sure about this?" After Agnarr finishes telling his story, Anna says, "Whoever saved you, I love them!", and Iduna playfully covers her daughter with the scarf.
Years later, the scarf is shown again when Anna comes into Elsa's room and sees Elsa wearing it. Anna says that something is bothering Elsa because she wears their mother's scarf whenever something is bothering her. By this point, Elsa is hearing the mysterious voice calling out to her, but doesn't tell Anna about it. Anna decides to comfort her sister by saying "Cuddle close. Scooch in.", which is what Iduna told them to do before she first sang her lullaby "All Is Found" to them years earlier. In response to Anna saying these words, Elsa, while still wearing the scarf, snuggles into her sister's embrace. They both fall asleep soon after singing the first lyrics of the song together. When Elsa is awakened by the voice, Anna is shown sleeping with the scarf draped over her stomach.
After settling the Fire Spirit and the fires it spread through the Forest, Elsa chastises Anna for putting herself in danger by following her (Elsa) into the fire. When both calm down, Elsa claims she knows what Anna needs to feel better. She pulls out the scarf and drapes it around her sister's shoulders. Yelana, Honeymaren, Ryder, and other Northudrans, who were watching the exchange, gasp when they see the scarf. Yelana asks where they got it, while Ryder and Honeymaren explain it's a Northuldra scarf that comes from one of their oldest families. Anna answers that it belonged to their mother, then Elsa runs her over to the ice sculpture she had created earlier of the Northuldran girl who rescued their father the day of the battle in the Forest. After noticing that the girl is wearing a scarf with designs in it like the one in their mother's scarf, the sisters realize that Agnarr's mysterious savior was none other than Iduna. The discovery also makes Elsa and Anna realize they have Northuldran roots through their mother, and the people welcome them into the tribe.
While the group, along with Lieutenant Mattias and his soldiers, stay in the Northuldra's encampment, Elsa has a conversation with Honeymaren over the scarf. Honeymaren shows Elsa the symbols that represent the four elemental spirits on the scarf, then reveals a centerpiece that represents a fifth spirit which is said to be a bridge between humans and the magic of nature.
The scarf is shown for the final time in memory form when Elsa makes it to Ahtohallan. While singing "Show Yourself", Elsa come to the main chamber and steps onto the centerpiece located between the diamonds that represent the four elemental spirits. It subsequently lights up and reveals visual moments in time, including those from the distant past, making Elsa realize that she is the fifth spirit. One of the memories she sees is of her parents as children, when a vocalizing Iduna (who has her scarf draped around her shoulders) rescues the unconscious Agnarr with the help of the Wind Spirit.
After her song, Elsa finds herself surrounded by snowy ice manifestations of past moments, including those of her parents, both as children and adults. One memory shows Iduna and Agnarr in each others' embrace, with the former wanting to tell the latter about her past, while the other shows young Iduna and Gale placing the unconscious young Agnarr in a wagon. Iduna wears her scarf in both memories.
