Iguanodon was one of the first dinosaurs ever to be discovered. It lived in the early Cretaceous Period, about 110–140 million years ago. This particular Iguanodon is showcased in Disney's 2000 animated feature film Dinosaur.

Background

Real life

Iguanodon could grow to a length of 33 feet (10 meters) and a height of 10 feet (3 meters) tall on all fours, but on its hind legs, it could stand 16 feet (5 meters) tall. It could also move on all fours or just on its hind legs. The "hands" of the Iguanodon made this ornithopod different from most other dinosaurs. Each hand had five "fingers", or digits. Three fingers in the middle had hoof-like claws, which were useful when walking. Another finger could be pulled in toward the palm and was used to grasp with. A fifth finger was a sharp, spiked thumb used for defense.

Appearances

Dinosaur

Iguanodons are the lead species of the film. The protagonist, Aladar, is an Iguanodon, as well as other members of the herd, including its leader Kron, his sister Neera, and his lieutenant Bruton. Additionally, deleted scenes establish that the Nesting Grounds migration tradition was started by an Iguanodon named Old Gotama, with his fossilized remains being found in a rocky wall still watching over the herds coming in and out.

In the film, the Iguanodons were portrayed with lips instead of a beak because the producers found that this was easier to animate in computer animation.

DINOSAUR

The Iguanodon serves the main subject of the attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom as part of Dr. Grant Seeker's plans to bring a dinosaur back from extinction into the modern timeline. Upon traveling back in time, Seeker began to explore the prehistoric era passing by various dinosaurs, but could not find the Iguanodon. Just as a meteor shower occurs and the time rover is stalked by a Carnotaurus, the vehicles pass by the Iguanodon which the riders pass by it, which the scanner identifies the dinosaur that Seeker was looking for. Seeker instead decides to abort the mission while evading the Carnotaurus and successfully travelling back to the modern time. However, the Iguanodon suddenly escapes from extinction, which Seeker was unaware of until he realized that the Iguanodon arrived at the institute as revealed via TV monitors.
