Isola del Mare is an island near Portorosso, that has gained the reputation of being a haunted island, due to many weird sightings and occurrences that could confirm the existence of sea monsters.
It is the home of Alberto, and the former home of his father, where he lives in a tower and collects items from nearby boats. Here, Alberto & Luca Paguro spend most of their moments, riding down their makeshift Vespa & spying on fishermen.
Trivia[]
The name, Isola del Mare, means "Island of the sea" in Italian.
Its name was revealed on one of the fishermen's map in the beginning of the film.
The island took inspiration from real Italian island, Isola del Tino, situated in the Ligurian Sea just nearby Portovenere, Italy.[1][2]
In an early adaptation of the film, Isola del Mare was originally going to include a small seaside town of its own that would be inhabited by a small community of sea monsters, where they would assume their human forms and wave at any boats that pass by. Once the coast is clear that there are no humans around, someone would ring a bell and the monsters would be free to douse themselves with water to expose their true forms or jump into the ocean to go to the monster's underwater world. This concept was abandoned because the filmmakers found it too complex and redundant to focus on two towns (Portorosso and the island town), and wanted to make the visit to Portorosso feel special.
