Jacqueline de Bellefort is a character featured in the 2022 mystery film Death on the Nile based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. She is portrayed by Emma Mackey, an English actress known for her role as Maeve Wiley in the Netflix series Sex Education.
Background[]
Jacqueline, or Jackie, is a young woman of French and American descent, who was born into aristocracy but lost her fortune after her father left her mother for another woman and the Wall Street crash. She is the childhood friend of Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle, a wealthy heiress, and the former fiancée of Simon Doyle, a land agent. She is deeply in love with Simon and plans to marry him, until Linnet seduces him and marries him instead, betraying Jackie's friendship and breaking her heart.
Seeking revenge, Jackie plots with Simon, who still loves her, to murder Linnet and inherit her fortune. They follow Linnet and Simon's honeymoon trip to Egypt, where they board a river steamer along with several other passengers, including the famous detective Hercule Poirot. Jackie pretends to stalk and harass Linnet, while secretly conspiring with Simon to kill her. Their plan involves shooting Linnet in her cabin, and then shooting Simon in the leg to make it look like he was attacked by Jackie. They also frame other suspects by planting false clues and manipulating their motives.
However, their scheme is eventually uncovered by Poirot, who reveals that he had met Jackie before at a London club and noticed her excessive love for Simon. He also deduces that Jackie had faked her own alibi by using a pearl necklace to lock her cabin door from the outside. He confronts Jackie and Simon with the evidence and exposes their guilt. Jackie then confesses that she had masterminded the murder, but only to protect Simon from Linnet's cruelty. She also reveals that she had poisoned herself and Simon with a lethal drug, preferring to die together than face justice. She kisses Simon goodbye and dies in his arms, while he succumbs shortly after.
