Jadis' Army, also known as the White Witch's Army, is a group of supporting antagonists from in the 2005 Disney/Walden Media adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They are a group of supporters who serve Jadis in her plans to invade Narnia.

Background[]

Jadis' Army is composed of various Narnians who assist Jadis in helping invade the country of Narnia. Throughout the events of the film, they obey their tyrannical queen Jadis who is in charge of bringing an Army against Aslan. When Aslan prepares to sacrifice himself, creatures part of Jadis' Army support their leader in sacrificing Aslan. With Aslan killed during the sacrifice, various creatures later take part during battle at Beruna to invade Narnia, much to Peter leading an army consisting of Aslan's supporters to avenge Aslan's death. Later after Aslan is revived from the dead, he arrives at the area where Jadis' Army is taking place just as he leaps on their leader, ending her tyranny forever, causing the battle to end with Jadis' Army being disbanded.

Members[]

Please note: This page only includes creatures seen in the Disney adaptation of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and not in other adaptations of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe".

Creatures seen in Jadis' Army are composed of various creatures - consisting of real-world animals and legendary creatures who are associated with Jadis (including creatures who have no real-world mythology counterparts). Throughout the film, Jadis' Army consists of large numbers of creatures and animals such as minotaurs, wolves, ghouls, goblins, werewolves, harpies, white tigers, cyclopes, and many other creatures who assist Jadis during her plans to invade Narnia.

Role in the film[]

After the death of Maugrim during Peter's first fight, a lone wolf told the other wolves to gather Jadis' army of evil creatures to take revenge against Aslan. In Jadis' Camp, several members of Jadis' Army are seen getting their weapons ready and amongst the minions seen are ogres, dwarfs, minotaurs, and others preparing for battle. General Otmin devises a strategy of what they will do to conquer Narnia just as the lone wolf arrives at the area where Jadis is at while Aslan's Army rescues Edmund from the camp with Ginarrbrik being tied up just as Otmin notices that Edmund has escaped just as Jadis explains to her general that she has work to do. Later during a training montage of the Pevensies, Mr. Beaver warns Edmund that Jadis is on her way to Aslan's camp as Ginarrbrik, some cyclopes, and some minotaurs present Jadis to Aslan, much to the other Narnians who are upset about Jadis' betrayal to Narnia just as Jadis explains that all of Narnia will perish under her rule as she threatens to have Edmund killed on the Stone Table to which Aslan decides to engage in a private conversation with Jadis about protecting Edmund. The other members of Aslan's Army then murmur about what will Aslan do now about Jadis' decision just as he explains to the Narnians that Jadis has renounced her claim on Edmund just as the other Narnians associated with Aslan celebrate that Edmund is safe after all.

At the Stone Table, various creatures associated with Jadis have been gathered to meet Aslan. Amongst the creatures gathered are ghouls, harpies, werewolves, minotaurs, goblins, hags, dwarfs, and other creatures who are waiting for the sacrifice to which as Aslan arrives, Jadis tells them, "Behold the Great Lion", Aslan is surrounded by various creatures preparing for the sacrifice. During the sacrifice, minotaurs, ghouls, harpies, wolves, ogres, hags, werewolves, and goblins are gathered to watch the sacrifice; Otmin suddenly knocks Aslan onto the ground with various ghouls, ogres, minotaurs, goblins, and other creatures tying him up with ropes but before they can kill Aslan, Jadis orders Ginarrbrik to shave his mane to which Aslan's mane is successfully shaved and placed into the Stone Table. With Aslan brought to the Stone Table, four hags bang their staffs while the sacrifice begins with wolves howling and other creatures snarling just as Jadis tells Aslan that he will fall under the tyranny of Jadis to which she tells them that they will take over Narnia after killing Aslan. Jadis then kills Aslan during sacrifice, much to Susan and Lucy's sadness. With Aslan killed on the Stone Table, Jadis announces that Aslan is dead which the evil creatures celebrate the sacrifice. Jadis then alerts General Otmin to recruit the evil creatures to get ready for battle at Beruna and take over Narnia. All of Narnia then mourns Aslan's death with Jadis' Army planning to take over Narnia.

The next day at Beruna, Otmin appears on a hill and begins roaring to get ready to face Aslan's Army seen from the far distance. Amongst the creatures marching across Beruna are goblins, werewolves, ghouls, dwarfs, minotaurs, wolves, white tigers, Boggles, Ankle Slicers, Minoboars, cyclopes, dwarfs, and giants that take part during battle to which they halt upon facing Aslan's Army who are ready to fight back. Jadis, who was not in the mood for prisoners, orders her army to kill all of Aslan's which Otmin agrees, followed by Ginarrbrik angrily wielding his axe just as the army plans to do so. Suddenly, the minotaurs, goblins, wolves, white tigers, werewolves, and other creatures leap down a hill and charge across the battlefield, preparing to attack. Seeing the army closing by, Peter then summons a flock of gryphons and eagles part of Aslan's Army to fight off the incoming army to which as the incoming army approaches, Otmin tells the other minions to look at the sky to see what is coming. Above the sky, gryphons and eagles drop boulders on several minions of Jadis' Army, killing many of them as they attempt to approach Aslan's Army.

In the extended version of the film, the White Witch summons a flock of harpies to stop the gryphons and eagles that are dropping boulders on the charging army to which upon doing so, they violently clash with the gryphons and eagles. One harpy takes on a gryphon, causing both of each other to fall from high above the sky, killing each other just as the gryphons and eagles continue dropping more boulders on the minions.

As the eagles and gryphons continue attacking, archer black dwarfs fire arrows at the gryphons and eagles in revenge just as Aslan's Army readies themselves to fight back. Soon as Peter yells, "For Narnia, and for Aslan!", Aslan's army charges in front of Jadis' incoming army to avenge Aslan who sacrificed himself to which upon doing so, Jadis' Army charges in front of Aslan's Army (with the faster werewolves and white tigers speeding up to the front to counter the cheetahs and leopards in Aslan's Army) just as the two armies clash violently during the battle with Aslan's Army, attacking several minions. As Aslan's Army clashes with Jadis' Army, Otmin then grabs his weapon and dispatches two centaurs in rage throughout the violent battle.

Later after the Stone Table cracks with Aslan revealed to have being alive all along, he then brings Susan and Lucy to the Witch's Castle to bring reinforcements to help Peter and Edmund win the battle against Jadis' Army. The battle continues across Narnia with Jadis' Army clashing with Aslan's Army across Beruna. As Jadis and her army approach Peter, Edmund tells a centauress archer to fire an arrow to summon a phoenix to create a fire barrier to block Jadis and her army. In the extended version of the film as the phoenix is summoned, the archer black dwarfs attempt to shoot the phoenix with their arrows to which it successfully dodges the arrows while a harpy on the battleground sees the phoenix and prepares to intercept it. Seeing the harpy, Peter grabs a spear from a dead cyclops and tosses it at the incoming harpy, successfully killing to prevent it from tackling the phoenix. With the harpy killed, Peter then encounters a goblin attempting to fire an arrow at the phoenix to which Peter kills it in time as well as dispatching two more minotaurs just as the phoenix continues arriving at the battlegrounds with no archers or harpies attempting to kill it. As the phoenix arrives, it successfully creates a fire barrier to block Jadis and her army, burning anyone who tried to cross it, just as Aslan's Army cheers for a success. The fire barrier is suddenly undone when the two polar bears on Jadis' chariot use an icy breath against it to undo the fiery wall just as Mr. Beaver gives out the signal for Edmund while Aslan, Susan, and Lucy are on their way to the Witch's Courtyard to revive and rescue the prisoners to help them bring in reinforcements to help defeat Jadis' Army.

Back at the battlefield, the archers fire arrows at several minions of Jadis' Army, dispatching them while an offscreen archer fires an arrow at a faun; Ginarrbrik fires an arrow at Peter's unicorn, injuring it and its rider in the process. A rhinoceros and Oreius then charge in front Jadis and some incoming minions, much to Peter's worry that the White Witch would petrify them into stone. The rhino then kills two minotaurs and an ogre, but is suddenly tripped over by an Ankle Slicer, a small avian-like creature that can trip over big creatures part of Aslan's Army. Oreius then defeats another ogre and engages in a duel with Otmin, the minotaur general who is trying to prevent him from killing Jadis. Throughout the duel, Oreius suddenly kills Otmin by placing another sword on his back, finally dispatching him. Oreius then dispatches another minotaur and then leaps into Jadis and her chariot of polar bears (which they were unable to hit Oreius with their claws) just as Oreius is turned into stone when Jadis used her wand on him.

As the battle continues to become more violent, two fauns are knocked out by minotaurs during battle as two gryphons attempt to fly into Jadis but she protects herself from being attacked, killing both of them (the second one being turned to stone and later getting smashed to pieces in its stone form, taking out other members of Aslan's army in the process); Peter then warns Edmund that there are too many minions of the White Witch during battle just as Mr. Beaver escorts Edmund to safety while Peter dispatches a minotaur. Across the canyon, various members of Jadis' Army continue fighting against Aslan's Army in a massive war followed by a faun being turned into stone while trying to take on Jadis and then a leopard which then attempts to pounce on her, but she petrifies it into stone. Edmund then risks himself to destroy Jadis' staff while the other members of Aslan's Army continue fighting against Jadis' Army during battle, not listening to Mr. Beaver's warning. On his way over, he passed a minotaur getting pulled down by a gorilla and a black dwarf fighting a boar that was chewing on his leg. In the extended version of the film, Edmund encounters Ginarrbrik who is preparing to kill a red dwarf who was part of Aslan's Army to which Edmund manages to prevent Ginarrbrik from attacking the dwarf, slicing off part of Ginarrbrik's beard and saving the other dwarf. Soon as Edmund destroys Jadis' wand, Jadis attacks him, causing him to be injured during battle.

With Edmund injured by Jadis, Peter then takes on her by himself during battle as the other Narnians affiliated with Aslan and Jadis continue fighting against each other across Beruna. As Peter is dueling with Jadis throughout the battle while the other Narnians continue clashing with each other, Aslan, who was brought back from the dead, arrives at Beruna in time to which he roars loudly, much to Jadis' shock that Aslan came back. Amongst the followers accompanying Aslan who has arrived at Beruna are Susan, Lucy, Mr. Tumnus, and a large group of reinforcements from Jadis' Courtyard who arrive to help end the battle of Beruna. The reinforcements then charge across the battlefield with Mr. Tumnus, unarmed, dispatching a goblin preparing to strike him, followed by Rumblebuffin swinging his club against two minotaurs. Soon as Jadis attempts to finish off Peter, Aslan suddenly arrives during battle and tackles Jadis, defeating her and ending her tyranny and causing her army to become disbanded. With Jadis defeated, Ginarrbrik killed by Susan's arrow, Edmund completely healed after the battle, and the rest of the army of evil creatures disbanded, the members of Aslan's Army celebrate their victory against Jadis, followed by the Pevensies being crowned as the kings and queens of Narnia at the castle of Cair Paravel.

By the events of Prince Caspian, the surviving members of Jadis' Army (excluding the Hag and the Werewolf) join forces with the surviving Narnians who were originally members of Aslan's Army to help fight against the Telmarine Army, forming into a new military group known as the Old Narnians.

Video game appearances[]

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe[]

Members of Jadis' Army appear as common enemies throughout the video game adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They are encountered in most levels that take place in Narnia and serve as enemies throughout the game.

In addition to having regular enemies in the console versions, some creatures part of Jadis' Army have armor (such as ogres and minotaurs) which are resistant to normal attacks and can only be removed by Peter or Edmund with special moves, which Susan or Lucy cannot do so in combat. Several banes throughout the game also help Peter or Edmund defeat any of the creatures part of Jadis' Army weak against these in one hit which can be purchased if the player collects a certain amount of coins earned throughout the game. These abilities include Wolf Bane (applies to wolves but not werewolves nor Maugrim, due to the latter being the boss of "The Great River" level), Ghoul Bane (applies to ghouls), Boggle Bane (applies to Boggles), Ogre Bane (applies to ogres, but not the one fought as a boss in the "Beaver Dam" level), and Minoboar Bane (applies to Minoboars). Additionally, any of these can help Peter or Edmund remove a minotaur's armor in battle, despite not having a Minotaur Bane ability in the game itself. In addition to this, Susan can also use her panpipes to put many enemies to sleep by standing on a spot where Susan can use her panpipes (the player can also use this on the centaurs in the "Follow Aslan" level who warn Susan and Lucy that it is too late to explore Narnia at nighttime). Once the player presses a number of buttons on their controller in order correctly without making a mistake and without getting attacked by the nearby enemy (which can cause the player to press the buttons in order again), all the nearby enemies surrounding Susan are temporarily put to sleep. Although Susan's panpipes can temporarily put many enemies to sleep, Minoboars have a very high resistance to sleep and are immune to being put to sleep by Susan's panpipes.

Furthermore, many of the enemies take part during battle at Beruna in later levels, giving them a major role in the game. During the "Battle of Beruna" level, giants appear during the battle serving as the level's mini-bosses and the player cannot physically damage the giants with normal or special attacks. In order to defeat the giants, the player must defeat an exact number of enemies during battle matching shown on the counter of each enemy icon in order to summon reinforcements to defeat the giants. The barrels given during battle can be rolled in front of the giants to hold them back to prevent them from destroying the reinforcements. Once the player has defeated an exact number of enemies during battle, they then must summon the centaurs and eagles to take down the giants that appear during battle. If the player does not do so, the giant that gets too close to the reinforcements will destroy the centaurs, causing the player to restart the level (especially in the checkpoint where they left off). After defeating the giants, the player must take on Otmin, who serves as the boss during battle at Beruna by performing a number of special moves to defeat the minotaur general. The player must also defeat other enemies that appear during the battle against Otmin as well, making the battle more difficult. Once the player depletes all of Otmin's health, it triggers a cutscene of Oreius facing Otmin where Oreius arrives during battle and successfully kills Otmin, completing the level.

In the level "The Great Battle", various enemies part of Jadis' Army are summoned during a massive battle and before starting a level, an in-game message appears and tells the player to add reinforcements to help out fight against Jadis' Army and the number of reinforcements the player can select depend on how many statues are found throughout the past levels to facilitate the player's progress in facing off Jadis' Army, such as the Phoenix Strike (which summons a phoenix to clear out many enemies during battle), the Arrow Barrage (which summons the archers part of Aslan's Army to fire arrows at the remaining enemies), the Centaur Charge (which summons an army of centaurs to defeat many remaining enemies on screen), or the Eagle Strike (which summons the eagles dropping boulders on the remaining enemies during battle). After the player selects a number of reinforcements of their choice, they must survive seven waves by defeating large numbers of enemies during battle. In case the battle becomes more dangerous with many tougher enemies appearing during battle, the player can summon reinforcements in case of emergency, but the player must use them wisely as they have a limited number of reinforcements they have chosen during battle as they cannot add more after the in-game message which is seen before starting the level.

In the game's last level "The White Witch", harpies assist Jadis during the battle and while fighting against Jadis, the harpies can grab boulders and then drop it on the Pevensies, causing damage if they are not careful, which the player must avoid at all costs during battle, because Susan cannot target them with her bow to dispatch them. Many enemies from the past levels are summoned to assist Jadis during battle to make the battle against her even more difficult. While confronting Jadis, two cyclopes serving as the mini-bosses are summoned during the battle which the player must defeat and upon defeating the cyclopes, Jadis then confronts the player again. While facing Jadis during battle, the player must confront her many times while facing off many enemies appearing during battle and in order to finish off Jadis, the player must have Susan to blow her horn to summon Aslan and end the battle of Beruna between Aslan's Army and Jadis' Army. Doing so triggers a cutscene of Jadis being defeated forever, which ends her tyranny with her army being disbanded with the Pevensies being crowned kings and queens of Narnia, finishing the game.

Differences from source material[]

  • Several of the creatures part of Jadis' Army in the 2005 adaptation of the film were created exclusively for the Disney/Walden Media adaptation of the film. These creatures that do not appear nor are mentioned in these books include harpies, white tigers, ankle slicers, or polar bears. Thus, they do not appear in C.S. Lewis' workshop.
    • The 1979 animated adaptation of the story and the 1988 BBC TV serial adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe also include creatures affiliated with Jadis' Army that do not appear nor are mentioned in the original books. Several of the creatures part of the White Witch's Army in these adaptations consist of generic monsters or humanoid animals which were not featured or mentioned in the original book nor in Lewis' workshop.
      • On a related note while the original book, the 1988 BBC serial adaptation, and the 2005 Disney adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe showed minotaurs fighting with the White Witch's Army, the 1979 animated adaptation of the said story also featured minotaurs fighting with Aslan's Army instead of fighting with the White Witch's Army. Additionally while tigers are not seen nor are mentioned in the original books, despite only appearing in the Disney adaptation of the story, there were also two tigers who were stone prisoners in the White Witch's Courtyard in the 1979 animated adaptation of the story. The tigers seen as stone prisoners consist of a winged tiger and a tiger with a unicorn-like horn sticking out of its forehead. Given the fact that these two tigers are seen as prisoners in the courtyard indicate they serve Aslan's Army whereas in the Disney adaptation of the story, the tigers seen in this film serve Jadis' Army.
    • In the original story, it is said that the Witch's Dwarf wore polar bear fur, despite no actual polar bears being mentioned in the Narnia books.
  • Wraiths and specters from the orignal book of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are also mentioned in the "Discover Narnia Fun Facts" bonus features included on the DVD releases of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but do not appear in the film itself. In the console versions of the video game adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, black spiritual beings which are supposedly wraiths or specters are encountered in "The Witch's Castle" level which the player must ward off from the statues of petrified Narnians for Aslan to revive; however, unlike other enemies in the game, the player cannot physically damage them with normal attacks. These spiritual enemies are weak against light which can ward the shadow spirits off the statues such as having Susan ignite her arrows on fire and then shooting the dark creatures or shooting windows to emit beams of light to drive off the dark spirits; these spiritual beings can also damage the player if approached upon contact.

Trivia[]

  • The size comparison chart for the Disney adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe includes a raven which is part of Jadis' Army, but was not seen in any instances where Jadis' Army appears for unknown reasons throughout the film, whether if it is the original theatrical version or the extended edition. It is unknown how the raven ended up in the comparison chart and thus the raven is likely scrapped.
    • Despite this, ravens somehow ended up in the video game adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in both the console versions and the DS versions respectively. In the console versions, ravens appear as enemies where they harm the player upon contact; unlike most enemies, they cannot be defeated with any method of attack. In the DS versions, ravens (referred to as "crows" through in-game text) appear as enemies that serve Jadis, army first appearing in the "Beaver's Glade" level, where they attack their opponents by pecking. Additionally, the DS version also includes rats serving as enemies in the game, which did not appear in the respective size comparison charts for Aslan's Army and Jadis' Army for unknown reasons.
    • A satyr is also featured in the size comparison chart for Jadis' Army implying that Jadis was to have evil satyrs serving her in the Disney adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but the only satyrs seen visible in many instances throughout the film are the ones who work for Aslan's Army. It is unknown how the size comparison chart for Jadis' Army includes a satyr in its lineup, and thus it is likely scrapped from the final version of the film.
  • The harpies seen in the Disney adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are depicted as humanoid bat-like creatures (half-human and half-bat hybrids) unlike their original mythological counterparts which are depicted as half-human and half-bird hybrids.
  • According to the concept art for the Disney adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, certain creatures such as gorgons, manticores, succubi, evil satyrs (opposite counterpart of Aslan's satyrs), fomorians and evil dryads were originally going to be in the Disney adaptation of the film serving Jadis' Army prior to being scrapped in the final version of the film.
  • The extended version of the film released on December 12, 2006 adds additional scenes of battle sequences where Jadis' Army appears that were not present in the original theatrical release:
    • During the scene where the gryphons and eagles are dropping rocks at the charging Army, a flock of harpies is summoned to kill the gryphons and eagles. Throughout the assault, the harpies clash with the gryphons and eagles throughout the scene. In the original theatrical edition, the only scene where the harpies are seen is during Aslan's sacrifice at the Stone Table.
    • During the scene where Aslan's Army clashes with each other after the scene where Oreius takes out several minions with his swords, the extended version adds a minotaur who kills a charging centaur and a minoboar taking on a faun only for a rhinoceros to dispatch them both. This scene was not present in the original theatrical edition. Instead in the original edition where Oreius is seen taking out various minions, it simply cuts to General Otmin who dispatches two centaurs in rage.
    • In the extended phoenix sequence, a few dwarfs are seen trying to fire arrows at the phoenix to which it successfully avoids the arrows. In addition to that, it includes a harpy attempting to take on the phoenix only for Peter to counter its attack by throwing a spear which he grabbed from a dead cyclops at the harpy which suddenly kills it. Additionally, Peter kills a goblin attempting to fire an arrow at the phoenix as well dispatching as two more minotaurs. In the original theatrical edition, the phoenix is seen for only a few minutes where it simply arrives at the battlefield to successfully create a fire barrier.
    • During the scene where a rhino attempts to attack Jadis, ramming into and bashing aside other members of her army in the process, only for it to be tumbled by Ankle Slicers, the extended version adds an additional shot of a close-up of an Ankle Slicer taking down the rhino. This brief instance does not appear in the original theatrical edition.
    • The duel between Oreius and Otmin has been extended. It adds an additional shot of Otmin furiously ramming Oreius into a boulder followed by Oreius catching his sword which he tosses mid air just before he places his sword on Otmin to dispatch him, also killing the minotaur general. These instances do not appear in the original theatrical edition.
    • During the scene where Edmund attempts to destroy Jadis' wand, he encounters Ginarrbrik attempting to kill a red dwarf who was part of Aslan's Army only for Edmund to save him from being attacked by Ginarrbrik, causing him to fall down from high below to make him lie down unconsciously. This scene was not included in the original theatrical edition.
