James LaRue Avery was an American actor, voice actor, and poet, who was best known for his voice role as Shredder in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from 1987 to 1996, and for his television role as Philip Banks in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from 1990 to 1996.

For Disney, he voiced Haroud Hazi Bin in the Aladdin TV series, Mr. Clapper in Pepper Ann, Br'er Bear and Br'er Frog in Splash Mountain, a shaman in Gargoyles, Chief Keewazi in The Legend of Tarzan, Crandall Smythe in The Proud Family, Br'er Bear from 1989 to 2011, and Mr. Narrator in Animated StoryBook: The Lion King. He also played Oliver in Sunday Drive, Calvin Bridges in You Lucky Dog and Presto Jones in That's So Raven.
