Jason is a character from the SeaBase aquarium at The Living Seas at Epcot.

History[]

Background[]

Jason is a remote-controlled submarine robot who was built to explore the world's deepest oceans. Built by scientists to showcase advanced technology, Jason is also capable of handling the pressure when he is deployed underwater as well as staying underwater for weeks, unlike the scientists on submersibles who have to reach for the surface to breathe for air. In addition to this, Jason's TV cameras also help scientists study aquatic lifeforms remotely to showcase the creatures his cameras show, especially the strangest sea creatures that no one has ever known.

Development history[]

The Jason character was created for the now-extinct Living Seas attraction at Epcot which opened on January 15, 1986 as an interactive attraction for guests where he was. Jason has two forms in the former attraction: one which is his animatronic form encountered in the area showcasing Jason and the other in animation form shown on the TV cameras featuring Jason in animation form while the animatronic Jason is the one who provides the narration in the section.

The Living Seas closed in 2005 to make way for The Seas with Nemo & Friends which opened in 2007, resulting in Jason being removed from the attraction to make way for its Finding Nemo theme.

Appearances[]

The Living Seas[]

Jason was found at the SeaBase Alpha where he gave education to guests of how the process of exploring underwater works by telling guests to look at the TV screens while trying to give guests education that scientists built submarines to explore more about the ocean which during the process, he gave out information of what scientists did to help him explore the oceans of the world and how the scientists built him for ocean exploration and how the process works especially for robots like Jason. At the end of the show, Jason tells the audience that the depths hold many wonders yet to be discovered due to much of the ocean being unexplored with many remaining to be learned from the mysteries of the deep.

Jason of the Deep[]

The animated short shown within the SeaBase Alpha exterior features an animated version of Jason while the animatronic version of Jason tells his story of how he was built and how submersible robots like Jason are an advanced technology into helping exploring the unexplored parts of the ocean's depths which were not explored for many years.
