- “That's what I'd say if I had anyone to replace you, but tonight I don't. You've got one last shot, Paula. If tonight's dream isn't the most mature, artful, life-changing, epiphany-making, rainbow-popping dream Riley has EVER had, you... will... be demoted... to brain farts!”
- ―Jean threatening Paula and revealing her true nature as an arrogant control freak
Jean Dewberry is the main antagonist of the Disney•Pixar animated series Dream Productions. She was the head of the titular location who constantly pressures the directors to make hit dreams for Riley Andersen.
Personality[]
At first glance, Jean seems to be a good-natured, if a bit condescending boss at times, often speaking to her fellow directors as if they were friends, but acting reasonably concerned when the current system of dreams isn't up to her standards. When things start going downhill though, Jean slowly reveals herself to be an arrogant control freak who thinks she knows better than her subordinates, as shown in the finale episode of Dream Productions where she takes over for a potentially bad dream script, believing that it's what's best for Riley.
Background[]
Jean was formerly the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Dream Productions, whose job was to make sure that the Riley's dreams are acceptable for the emotions at Headquarters.
In the finale episode, however, she was fired as CEO for overstepping her authority and demoted to be a trainee at the commissary at Dream Productions due to "personnel changes" by Anger.
Trivia[]
- This is not only Maya Rudolph's second Pixar role since Luca but also the first on a Pixar TV series.
- Coincidentally, both Daniela Paguro and Jean herself displayed overbearing tendencies, which extends to each of their relatives.
- Maya Rudolph has previously played a fellow aunt from another Disney production, with that being Aunt Cass from Big Hero 6.
- She and Anxiety are foils to each other, as both ladies believed that what they're each doing to Riley is what's best for their host. Whereas Anxiety does hers with heart, Jean instead implements hers with limited care. Furthermore, Anxiety later came to realize that what she was doing is not how it should be done, while Jean failed to come to her senses for her overbearing actions, which is what ultimately lead to her demotion.
- Ironically, their respective voice actresses share the same first name of Maya.
- She is the first antagonist in the Inside Out franchise to have a main villain role, unlike Jangles the Clown and Anxiety, as Jangles is only a minor antagonist while Anxiety (although she started as an antagonist) had the best of intentions for Riley, but she redeemed herself upon realizing her mistakes.
- On the other hand, Jean, thinking she was untouchable by her position as head of Dream Productions, abused her power by firing the directors and controlling Riley's dreams, indirectly causing her sleepwalking episode, and taking control of the direction with the nightmare that she herself approved, not caring about the psychological damage that said dream would cause Riley.
- She shares similarities with Smiler from The Emoji Movie, film produced by Sony Pictures Animation: both were heads of the companies, with the difference that the first was the leader of emojis at Textopolis while Jean was the head of Dream Productions; both abused their power without caring about the damage they themselves were causing, because (according to) they did it for the good of the child where they lived, and both were removed from their CEO positions.
- Interestingly, both characters were voiced by Maya Rudolph.
