"Jinxed" is the first segment of the third episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Gus is unable to speak after being jinxed by the Ashleys; he can only talk again if someone says his name, which the Ashleys try to prevent.

Plot[]

Gus is being reprimanded by the gang for trading his pet lizard for a harmonica. Despite his regret, he is told that he cannot take back the trade as it is against the code and he will be looked down upon by everyone. Gus relents and agrees to learn playing the instrument. Meanwhile, the Ashleys are bored and decide to do something "scandalous" to please their urges. They decide to pick on Gus and while he is away from the rest of the gang corner him and jinx him into saying "harmonica". Now he is unable to speak until someone says his name. To keep up the charade, the Ashleys decide to prevent everyone else from saying his name.

Gus attempts to alert the gang, but they get distracted by the Ashleys. Gus tries to write in the sand, but the Ashleys send the Kindergarteners to destroy his message. He attempts to use a notebook and pencil, but the owner of it gets mad and sends him to King Bob who is frustrated that he does not say anything. This culminates in Miss Finster getting involved and taking Gus to see Principal Prickly. When Prickly gets upset by his silence, he calls upon some experts to come and check on him. They too are baffled by his silence and resolve to take him away. The Ashleys voice their amusement over how far they have gone with the jinx and the gang overhear them, now knowing the reason for Gus's silence.

Gus is being escorted away by men in black as the other students begin to hail him for his "bravery". T.J. in one of his last minute plans finds a microphone and announces over the loudspeaker Gus's name, allowing him to speak. The men in black are amused that they were confronted by another jinxed kid for "the third time this week" and let him go, much to Prickly's annoyance. The students of Third Street now knowing the truth are amazed that Gus stayed true to the code and commend him for it. The Ashleys, unfazed by the resolution, muse over the results. However, the gang get back at them by jinxing them over the word "scandalous".

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • First episode to prominently feature the Ashleys in a major role.
  • When Gus is taken to the principal's office, another kid says Gus's name. However, since Gus was not in earshot, it did not count.
