Jo Marie Payton is an American television actress, voice actress, and singer, who, for Disney, provided the voice of Suga Mama Proud in Bruce W. Smith's The Proud Family, which reunited her with her former co-star, Orlando Brown.
Jo Marie Payton was born on August 3, 1950, in Albany, Georgia and later relocated to Opa-locka, Florida. Payton attended high school at North Dade Jr./Sr. High School and later graduated from Miami Carol City Senior High School in 1968 before attending and graduating from Albany State University.
Payton's big break came when she was cast as Harriette Winslow, the elevator operator in the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers. Her performance was so well received by audiences that she was given her own sitcom Family Matters, in 1989. She continued to play the role until 1997 when she left the midway through its final season. Her other television credits include Desperate Housewives, Silver Spoons, Reba, Girlfriends, Wanda at Large, Judging Amy, The Parkers, Will & Grace, The Hughleys, 7th Heaven, Moesha, The Jamie Foxx Show, 227, Meet the Browns, and The New Odd Couple. She also appeared in the Canadian TV miniseries The Rev and hosted her own show on the Hometeam Network Second Chance with Jomarie Payton.
She also appeared in both theatrical and television films, like Troop Beverly Hills, Colors, Disorderlies, From This Day Forward, and The Flight Before Christmas.
