John Arthur Lithgow is an American actor, voice actor, musician, poet, and author. He is probably best known for being a host on the late-night sketch comedy and variety show Saturday Night Live, as well as playing Dick Solomon in the NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. He also portrayed Eric Qualen, the main antagonist of the 1993 action film Cliffhanger (alongside Sylvester Stallone). Additionally, he voiced Jean-Claude in the 2000 Nickelodeon animated film Rugrats in Paris: The Movie and Lord Farquaad, the main antagonist of the 2001 DreamWorks animated film Shrek.
His other notable film appearances include Footloose (1984), Harry and the Hendersons, The Pelican Brief, A Civil Action, Kinsey, Dreamgirls, Love Is Strange, Miss Sloane, Beatriz at Dinner, Late Night, and Bombshell.
Additionally, Lithgow starred in numerous plays and musicals. In 1973, he made his Broadway debut in The Changing Room, in which he received his first Tony Award. In 1976, Lithgow acted (alongside Meryl Streep) in the plays 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and A Memory of Two Mondays. He received Tony Award nominations for the productions Requiem for a Heavyweight, M. Butterfly, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. In 2002, Lithgow received his second Tony Award, this time for a musical entitled Sweet Smell of Success. In 2007, he made his Royal Shakespeare Company debut as Malvolio in Twelfth Night. He returned to Broadway and performed in the plays The Columnist, Delicate Balance, and Hillary and Clinton.
For Disney, he voiced the White Rabbit in the ABC series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. He also portrayed Edgar West in the 2009 Touchstone Pictures film Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Judge Walter J. Skinner in A Civil Action.
