Sir John Mills, CBE (born Lewis Ernest Watts Mills) was an English actor, best known for playing William Robinson in the 1960 Disney film Swiss Family Robinson. He also made a cameo in the 1961 movie The Parent Trap (starring his daughter, Hayley) as Mitch Evers' Golf Caddy.
Mills was born in 1908 in North Elmham, Norfolk, and was educated various schools until he found work as a commercial traveller for the Sanitas Disinfectant Company. He later joined the British Army before being discharged due to a stomach ulcer. While having appeared in several plays, Mills wouldn't appear in films until the 1930s with The Midshipmaid Maid being his debut.
He later appeared in films both in Great Britain and the United States, such as Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Waterloo Road, Great Expectations (1946), Scott of the Antarctic, Escapade, Hobson's Choice, The End of the Affair, Dunkirk, Tiger Bay, Tunes of Glory, The Chalk Garden, The Truth About Spring, The Family Way, Ryan's Daughter, Gandhi, Sahara, and Cats (1998). His television credits included Dundee and the Culhane, The Zoo Gang, Tales of the Unexpected, Young at Heart, Hotel, Nanny and the Professor, and The Love Boat.
In 2002, he was named a Disney Legend, four years after his daughter, Hayley Mills was named one. He passed away in 2005 following a stroke.
