Jolie Pas Productions is an American film production company founded by actress and filmmaker Angelina Jolie. The company is responsible for producing films such as The Breadwinner, The One and Only Ivan, and First They Killed My Father, as well as co-producing the Maleficent franchise with Walt Disney Pictures. The company's name is derived from the French phrase "jolie pas", meaning "pretty step" or "nice move".

History[]

Jolie Pas Productions was established in 2014 by Angelina Jolie, who had previously directed and produced films such as In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken. The company's first project was the fantasy film Maleficent, a reimagining of the classic Disney animated film Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villain, played by Jolie. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $750 million worldwide and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.

In 2015, Jolie Pas Productions released By the Sea, a romantic drama written, directed, and produced by Jolie, who also starred alongside her then-husband Brad Pitt. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office flop, earning only $3.3 million against a budget of $10 million.

In 2017, Jolie Pas Productions produced two films that were based on true stories and focused on the themes of war, oppression, and survival. The first was The Breadwinner, an animated film about a young girl who disguises herself as a boy to support her family in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The film was co-produced with Cartoon Saloon and GKIDS, and received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. The second was First They Killed My Father, a biographical drama about the Cambodian genocide as seen through the eyes of a child. The film was co-produced with Netflix and Bophana Production and was selected as the Cambodian entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2019, Jolie Pas Productions co-produced the sequel to Maleficent, titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, with Walt Disney Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics and performed below expectations at the box office, grossing $491 million worldwide.

In 2020, Jolie Pas Productions produced The One and Only Ivan, a live-action/CGI hybrid film based on the children's novel of the same name by K.A. Applegate. The film was co-produced with Walt Disney Pictures and Allison Shearmur Productions and was released on Disney+ due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film received positive reviews from critics and won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
