Jonathan is the tritagonist of the 2025 live-action remake of Snow White. He serves as the love interest of Snow White, who he follows and supports into battle against the Queen to get back their kingdom. At first glance, he is a handsome thief who fends for himself and others' survival among the unjust reign.
Background[]
Jonathan is a commoner who struggles to feed himself and his friends, unlike the original character who is born into royalty. Jonathan is a rebel who wants to defy the Evil Queen's monarchy. At some point in his life, he would leave home and go on the run as a thief, eventually finding his own way in the world, specifically stealing from others for food. He is shown to have good agility as he can easily fight the queen's guards when he and Snow White are in the forest.
Role in the film[]
Jonathan is introduced when Snow White is cleaning the halls of the castle. Jonathan is seen stealing food for himself and his friends and Snow allows him to take some, but he is spotted by the evil queen, who plans to have him executed, but Snow tries to talk to her on his behalf. Unfortunately, the Queen insists on punishing him. Snow White frees Jonathan from being bound to the castle gates and gives him a piece of bread before telling him to leave.

After Snow meets the seven dwarfs, she plans to leave the next morning to find her father (unbeknownst to what really happened to him) and finds herself in the woods again. There she is greeted by Jonathan who tells her that her problems as a princess don't matter to him or apply to him. However, he does show compassion and tries to flirt with her with flowers. While they are in the woods, Jonathan introduces his bandits friends to Snow and the queen's guards try to find her. The group hides and Jonathan insists that Snow makes a run for it, but she wants to stay and fight, which impresses Jonathan. The two share a moment while hiding, but an arrow is aimed at Snow, but Jonathan saves her by taking the arrow for her. Snow White and the bandits go to the dwarfs' cottage. However, the bandits and dwarfs continue to argue until Snow tells them this is what the queen wants; everyone to hate each other. With words of encouragement from Snow, Doc heals Jonathan by sunset.
With Jonathan healed, everyone, including his friends, celebrates and dances together. Jonathan realises he is in love with Snow White and vice versa, especially when she finds out that he took that arrow to the chest for her. The two express their love through song and almost kiss before realising the dwarfs and bandits are watching. However, their moment is interrupted when they hear guards nearby. Snow wants to go with Jonathan, but he tells her she is the one the guards are looking for and it's too dangerous. Before leaving, Snow gives him her necklace as a reason to return and Jonathan promises to help her find her father. Jonathan and the bandits leave the location and lure the guards away, but Jonathan gets caught and taken to the Queen's court. Upon finding out where Snow White is, the Queen imprisons Jonathan and retreats to her secret chambers. Unbeknownst to Jonathan, the queen has disguised herself as an old hag to trick Snow White into eating a poisoned apple, which leads her into a sleeping death.

Jonathan spends some time in the dungeon, desperate to figure his way out, where the Huntsman has also been sent for failing to kill Snow White. Jonathan vents to the huntsman about how much he admires Snow and is assisted with breaking the chains to be able to free himself, and returns the favour by freeing the huntsman as well. Jonathan is able to find a horse and rides back towards the cottage in hopes to see Snow White, but sees the Seven Dwarfs mourning their friend. Johnathan kisses Snow White as thanks for helping him regain the hope he had lost for their kingdom. Snow White awakens and the couple happily embrace with a passionate kiss. Determined to save the kingdom, Snow rallies Jonathan, his friends and the dwarfs to take back the kingdom. As Snow White fails to get through to the queen, her stepmother meets her demise. Snow White and Jonathan soon marry where they are crowned the new king and queen of the kingdom.
Trivia[]
- Unlike the original character, Jonathan plays a larger role in the remake. He is also given a name in the remake, whereas the original character was never named.
- Also unlike the original, Jonathan's wedding to Snow White is shown, while the original film showed him awakening the princess and they rode off into the sunset.
- Jonathan is also not a prince, but instead is a commoner and later becomes king when he marries Snow White, and she is crowned queen. The prince never actually became king in the animated film.
- Jonathan does tell Snow that she must be mistaking him for a knight in shinning armor, which is likely a jab at the original prince.
- He is described as a "Robin Hood-like" person.
- His role as a swashbuckling thief for a love interest is like Aladdin from the film with the same name and Flynn Rider from Tangled.
- For the original animated film, Disney planned to have the Prince captured and imprisoned in the Evil Queen's dungeon before rescuing Snow White from her sleeping death, but scrapped the scene due to issues with animating realistic human men at the time. Disney seems to have brought back this concept for the 2025 film.
