Agustín Madrigal[]

Encanto Julieta & Agustín

Julieta looking affectionately at Agustín with a smile.

Agustín is Julieta's accident prone husband. Despite his flaws and the fact that he constantly has bad luck, she loves Agustín just the way he is and, although Julieta can sometimes get irritated by Agustín's frequent accidents, she is always ready to heal him when he has an injury or wound, giving him his food with love and helping him when he needs it. The two are very affectionate towards each other as they constantly hug and look at each other lovingly. It is unknown when they met, but at some point they developed a relationship as the result of Agustín continuously needing to go to Julieta for healing from such afflictions as bee stings. She loves Agustín very much and is willing to face the wishes of her mother Alma if she wants to get Agustín out of her life. Although Agustín wasn’t Alma’s first choice for Julieta and was skeptical that they would fall in love, Julieta loved Agustín so much that she did not follow her mother's words and married him years later. Over the years, the two have had three daughters (Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel) and are very supportive of them, working together to support and comfort them when they need it.

Throughout the film, Agustín usually takes cues from Julieta, letting her guide conversations. In "The Family Madrigal", Julieta affectionately kisses Agustín and smiles at her when he looks at her fondly. While it's very quick and a bit blurred out, she dances together with Agustín before Antonio's ceremony begins and in the graphic novel Julieta smiles when she hears him playing the piano at the party in Antonio's new room.[1] Agustín knows that she knows him perfectly, since he sat away from Julieta at dinner with the Guzmáns after learning of Bruno's vision in order to keep the secret. Despite having hidden the vision of Bruno from her, Julieta does not hesitate to be protective of her husband and calms him down when he gets angry. When Agustín was arguing with Alma after Mariano and Isabela's failed proposal dinner, who admonished him for not informing her of Bruno's vision; when Agustín was upset, Julieta lovingly took his arm to calm him down.

Family[]

Alma Madrigal[]

Encanto - Julieta and Alma

Julieta scolds Alma as she asks her to be nice to Mirabel.

Alma is Julieta's mother. It is unknown what kind of relationship that Julieta had with her mother growing up, but Julieta was always willing to help her mother take care of her family from a very young age due to her father having died when she was a baby, likely with Alma trusting Julieta to take care of her siblings when she is busy being the leader of the village and was too busy to do it. However at the beginning of the film, it is clear that Julieta's relationship with her mother is quite strained because of Alma's harsh treatment of Mirabel and Agustín, besides that Alma keeps a tight grip on her and her siblings to make them perfect. Although she respects Alma as her mother and the matriarch of the family, Julieta is not afraid to disobey her when she demands too much of her. Despite Alma's negative opinions about her affair with Agustín, Julieta still fell in love and married the man, although her mother was skeptical about it.

Julieta is also able to stand up to Alma when she treats Mirabel coldly. Before the night of Antonio's gift ceremony, Julieta felt the need to ask her mother to be nice to Mirabel because of how difficult the night was going to be because Mirabel's gift ceremony ten years earlier didn't work out. When the house starts cracking and the magic starts to fade after Bruno's vision is revealed to the family, Julieta cuts into her husband's argument with Alma to admonishes her mother for her harsh treatment of Mirabel. Despite the multiple run-ins she had with Alma, it's clear that Julieta loves her mother. In "All of You" she easily forgave her mother along with Pepa when Alma sincerely apologized for her mistake of caring about the magic more than the family.

Pepa Madrigal[]

Julieta looking worriedly at Pepa during dinner.

Pepa is Julieta's younger triplet sister. Both are very contrasting in personalities, Julieta is quiet, realistic, and calm while Pepa is more loud, anxious and prone to dramatics. Their relationship growing up is unknown, but in the present they are both very close and treat each other's children as if they were their own children. Although they don't interact much in the film, in the graphic novels it is shown that Julieta has a close bond with her sister, treating her kindly and allowing her to cook with her. In contrast to the negative opinion she initially had of Bruno, Pepa thinks highly of Julieta trusting her in times of crisis. During Mariano and Isabela's marriage proposal dinner, Julieta looks worriedly at her sister when she begins to lose control of her gift and listens to her when she tells her about the imminent disappearance of the miracle. After the Casa Madrigal collapses, Julieta immediately runs to help Pepa when she desperately calls for her to help check if any family members were hurt. In "All of You", Julieta and Pepa listen to their mother's sincere apologies and run to hug Bruno, happy to see him after more than a decade.

Bruno Madrigal[]

Juliet hugs Bruno

Julieta hugging Bruno when he returns after a decade.

Bruno is Julieta's younger triplet brother. Their relationship growing up is unknown, but she has always loved Bruno and worries about his well-being. When he simply disappeared one day without a trace, Julieta was saddened by his departure and since then she has been afraid that the same thing will happen to another member of her family, telling Mirabel that Bruno lost his way in the family and expressing that she doesn't want the same for her. Despite the fact that Bruno abandoned her and their family, Julieta never held a grudge or hatred towards him, unlike Pepa and Alma who bore a lot of resentment towards Bruno for leaving along with other reasons. Although the townsfolk and a majority of the family spoke poorly about him due to his gift causing problems, she fondly remembers her brother and has no problem mentioning his name. In "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Julieta is one of the few family members who doesn't sing or say something bad about him, showing that she was also not afraid of his gift to see the future.

When Bruno returns to the family after the collapse of the Casa Madrigal, Julieta and Pepa were on the verge of tears of joy at seeing him again and quickly ran to greet him with a hug. As Bruno attempts to apologize to her for past indiscretions, Julieta shushes him and tells him she's just glad that he's there and is okay. Happy that the whole family is finally together, she becomes very affectionate with her brother by hugging him several times and treating him affectionately when he rejoins the family. In the graphic novels, it is shown that Julieta is confident in Bruno's power, as she comments that his visions have always come true.

Isabela Madrigal[]

Encanto Comic - Julieta and Isabela

Julieta thanking Isabela for decorating her food.

Isabela is Julieta's eldest daughter. Although in the film they do not interact, the mother and daughter can be seen next to each other many times. In the graphic novels and comics it is seen that the two have a good relationship, with Julieta thanking her daughter when she helps her decorate some food for the townspeople and Isabela affectionately calling her "Mama" and worrying when she accidentally ruins the food did her mother. Julieta is proud of her daughter's "perfect" reputation, as in the graphic novel she can be seen looking up at Isabela with happiness as she grows different flowers in the village. However, due to their respective roles in the family or because she paid more attention to Mirabel as her youngest daughter, Julieta never realized the pressure Isabela was under having to meet Alma's expectations and having to be perfect. It is implied that she seems to be aware of Isabela and Mirabel's sisterly issues; at the proposal dinner, when Isabela is angrily glaring at Mirabel, Julieta can be seen looking at her eldest daughter with a sad look. She is surprised and saddened along with Agustín when Mirabel mentions to Alma that Isabela (along with Luisa) were never happy fulfilling the expectations that the family had for them.

Mirabel Madrigal[]

Julieta Cupping Her Daughter's Face

Julieta caresses Mirabel's face as she is glad that she is okay.

Mirabel is Julieta's youngest daughter. Julieta has a strong relationship with her daughter and apparently still sees Mirabel as her baby girl, embarrassing her by kissing her often and calling her sweet names. On the day of Antonio's gift ceremony, she offers Mirabel a chance to talk about her feelings if she wants to, assuring her that she has nothing to prove, and that she is perfect even without a gift. Despite her mother's controlling nature, Julieta is unafraid to stand up to and reprimand Alma for her hard attitude towards Mirabel, as she knows her daughter doesn’t deserve it. Julieta also cares a great deal about Mirabel's emotional wellbeing and relationship with her family, as shown by her concern that Mirabel might be drifting from the family as Bruno did. Her concern for her daughter's safety leads her to continue trying to get to Mirabel when the house collapses, in spite of Casita's successful attempts to eject her outside before she can reach Mirabel. After a heartbroken Mirabel runs away after Casita falls apart, Julieta is the first person to notice and immediately starts searching for her, showing she cares more about Mirabel than her family home being destroyed. When Mirabel returns home, Julieta is relieved to see her safe and sound, and expresses how proud she is of her as she watches Mirabel help their family rebuild their home.

Camilo Madrigal[]

Encanto - Julieta and Camilo

Julieta smiles that Camilo enjoys her food.

Camilo is Julieta's oldest nephew. Despite their limited interaction in the film, Julieta and Camilo are shown to be very close to the point of seeming like mother and son. She seems to have a soft spot for her nephew since although he has a mischievous personality, of all her sister's children, Julieta is noticeably closer and more affectionate with Camilo, treating him like a son. This is shown in various print materials where Julieta smiles when she sees him having fun in town and she prepares his favorite foods, implying that she enjoys pampering him. Camilo loves Julieta like a mother, since he is noticeably closer to her than to any of his uncles and never plays pranks on Julieta or shapeshifts into her, enjoying eating the food she cooks. During Antonio's gift ceremony, Julieta holds her nephew's hand and has her other arm lovingly around him like a mother would. As she hugs him, Camilo’s face has a gentle smile instead of his trademark cocky grin, which may indicate that Julieta is also a voice of reason and comfort to him. At the celebration in Antonio's new room, she happily talking with Camilo before the party is interrupted.
