Kai is a character in the 2025 Disney/Pixar long-form animated series, Win or Lose. She is the star-player on the softball team, The Pickles and is the main protagonist of "I Got It".

Background

Backstory

In her respective episode, it's shown that Kai recently moved to a new town to live with her dad to live with her grandmother. Upon arriving, she removes old pictures of herself playing baseball with her previous team, suggesting she may have had a negative experience with them, which possibly lead to the move. Initially, she wears a hoodie that covers her face, showing her insecurity, possibly tied to those past experiences. Even later in the episode, when she gets anxious about getting caught sharing test answers, she puts the same hoodie back on showing a trend. As Kai starts playing with the Pickles, she becomes more comfortable and confident, eventually taking off her hoodie and letting her hair grow out. Over time, she bonds with the team, and the team thrives.

Personality

Kai is the best softball player of The Pickles, a fact that everyone but her takes pride in. On the surface, she seems like a confident pre-teen, but looks can be deceiving as she shows a more vulnerable side to her. She isn't helped by the pressure she’s put under by her perfectionist father, James. Whenever she feels validation from others, she imagines herself flying, but whenever she is in a depressive mood or state, she imagines herself sinking into the ground.

Physical appearance

Kai is an African-American descent. She is initially introduced with shorter hair, which she grows out over time as a note to her newfound confidence.

Trivia

• Kai was initially written as a transgender girl. Ahead of the show's release, her episode "I Got It" was initially going to include more explicit focus on her gender identity, but it was ultimately dialled back by Disney to avoid a possible controversial reception for the character. However, subtle implications of her identity are present in the episode.
